And, a social and cultural change over the last 50 years. This was noticeable in the responsiveness of people, especially younger people to the training the collective I belonged to provided around psychiatric understandings and provision , from our perspective as service users/recipients.
Though the times are not good especially regarding funding, i hope services will (eventually?) provide a wide range of understandings and support, and psychiatric treatments where these are helpful with few harms (on a par with, say, anti histamines to ease hay fever)

And, a social and cultural change over the last 50 years. This was noticeable in the responsiveness of people, especially younger people to the training the collective I belonged to provided around psychiatric understandings and provision , from our perspective as service users/recipients. Though the times are not good especially regarding funding, i hope services will (eventually?) provide a wide range of understandings and support, and psychiatric treatments where these are helpful with few harms (on a par with, say, anti histamines to ease hay fever) i fought psychiatry & the system from day one - i stopped all medications 5 times - had 8 very severe psychotic episodes & 4 forced hospitalizations - i was also in addiction for 17 years - i am now over 20 years T-Total. The conclusion with the medical system is drug induced schizophrenia. i have been totally dependent on the anti psychotic medication for the past 18 years & will be on it for life now. However i tried stopping it i would end up in catatonic psychosis. Can discuss wonderful theoretical alternative treatments to the current system / society - But where is it? i have to argue a case of legitimate disability / illness or i won't get social security & will be homeless / psychotic & dead. i think some people need medication, especially in the majority of cases of schizophrenia. Any attempts to introduce comprehensive integral / integrated health / social security / social care systems within comprehensive front end services / healing homes / open dialogue / depth psychology etc (integrating all areas of the hard & soft sciences; biology, psychology, sociology, spirituality) always seem to be attacked & thwarted - same as any challenges to the dominant right wing / Capitalist / biomedical / religious conservative paradigm. We've had some 3 thousand years of organised dissent with the system, some 500 years of anti Capitalist / anti Colonization / pro feminine / pro human rights & equality etc movements - But the intrinsic structure of the wider society / system / civilization remains the same. Any attempts to unify social justice / the mental health movement is beset by endless divisions / camps / arguments / agendas. It is worse than herding cats & utterly pointless.

Btw. I totally dispute that it is a medical condition like heart disease or diabetes though both those conditions may also have environmental factors and are not necessarily genetic) Back with the entire 'anti / critical / pro / alternative' psychiatry War / debate / arguments. It will never be settled. Same as the God argument - religions / politics / mental health / socioeconomics; no one is ever going to agree on it all.

How would humans have discovered anything and developed without debate? How these debates are settled however is another matter.

Yes. With some limitations
Scientific knowledge is commonly specific to a particular question and may not always account for the wider context - tho computer simulations allow for hundreds of variables
But there is a lot of debate - and sometimes hostility- within the scientific community. An some insights can be rejected for years.
And our scientific findings go hand in hand with mathematical (Einstein) and technological (astronomical telescopes , MRI scans) developments .
But yes. Humanity has learned a lot through science both settling and causing disputes (Galileo).
