An exploratory analysis of the role of social supports in psychiatric medication discontinuation: results related to family involvement Laysha Ostrow ORCID Icon, Bevin Croft ORCID Icon, Anne Weaver & Sarah Naeger Received 16 Jan 2019, Accepted 01 May 2019, Published online: 20 May 2019 www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17522439.2019.1615110ABSTRACT Objective: Individuals in psychiatric treatment frequently choose to stop taking psychiatric medications, but little is known about the role of social supports in this process. Methods: This service user-led study of 194 adults who sought to completely discontinue prescribed psychiatric medications explores the role of various groups that may be a source of social support. Respondents who attempted to discontinue medication completed a web survey. We conducted bivariate and multivariate analyses to explore the relationship of social support to discontinuation. Results: Of all social support groups, only family was significantly associated with medication discontinuation. Respondents who rated family as helpful in the discontinuation process were less likely to completely discontinue than those who rated family as unhelpful or who reported no family involvement. Additionally, we observed a statistically significant but nonlinear relationship where respondents who rated their families as either “very supportive” or “very unsupportive” of the decision to discontinue were less likely to meet their original discontinuation goal than those with more neutral ratings. Discussion: The results of this study suggest families have an important and complex role in medication decision-making. Efforts to improve the quality of social networks should include family, as should future research.

"For anyone in the UK who is looking for an NHS Dr to do a SPECT scan, there is a Dr in Bristol, Dr Malizia, who does them and he recognises neurotoxicity! He is a Psychopharmacologist and Psychiatrist with a special interest in brain imaging related to psychotropic drugs."
A man from a facebook support group "self-referred himself to him and had a SPECT scan due to side effects caused by psychiatric medication. He was told by Dr Malizia that he had a neurotoxic reaction to psychiatric drugs."
His contact details are: www.litfieldhouse.co.uk/consultant/dr-andrea-malizia
SPECT scan sounds delightful.

Antidepressant withdrawal – the tide is finally turning www.cambridge.org/core/journals/epidemiology-and-psychiatric-sciences/article/antidepressant-withdrawal-the-tide-is-finally-turning/8394C10FE317CA5A39B62B86793FC3ED"Withdrawal reactions when coming off antidepressants have long been neglected or minimised. It took almost two decades after the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) entered the market for the first systematic review to be published. More reviews have followed, demonstrating that the dominant and long-held view that withdrawal is mostly mild, affects only a small minority and resolves spontaneously within 1–2 weeks, was at odd with the sparse but growing evidence base. What the scientific literature reveals is in close agreement with the thousands of service user testimonies available online in large forums. It suggests that withdrawal reactions are quite common, that they may last from a few weeks to several months or even longer, and that they are often severe. These findings are now increasingly acknowledged by official professional bodies and societies."

Petition for 'better provision for people coming off medication' Can you help NSUN member Diane Wright with her petition for 'better provision for people coming off medication'. "Facilities in healthcare are currently failing to train practitioners in the vital life enhancing skill of assisting patients withdraw from dependancy on any prescribed but toxic medication they want/need to stop taking. Addictive medication is obviously harmful in the long term yet a General Practitioner (GP) can currently only either stop or repeat prescriptions. Practices need to develop the necessary specialism patients are in want of to support their withdrawal from psychiatric drugs. Great health improvements will be gained, as well as saving on pharmaceuticals, once GP's, Healthcare assistants, nurses or other support workers are trained in how to offer the provision needed, such as in attaining smaller precise doses. I look forward to a future where there will be guidence and encouragement for anyone who would formerly have been struggling to withdraw from toxic medication and instead be more confident and able to end their pyschological dependency in a safe, supported and controlled manner without having to suffer terrible withdrawal symptoms or appear to relapse." If you have a particular interest in this issue and wish to discuss this further with Diane, please email her at ablequest@hotmail.com Better provision for people coming off medication - petition - www.change.org/p/boris-johnson-mp-better-provision-for-people-coming-off-medication

December 4 2019, marks the release of guidance which has been specifically written to support psychological therapists and their clients in having discussions about taking and withdrawing from psychiatric drugs. The comprehensive guidance is a collaboration between psychologists, peer support specialists and psychiatrists and aims to provide important context and evidence-based support to psychological therapists, whatever their particular modality. In this interview we hear from project lead Anne Guy, lived experience contributor Paul Sams and Professor of Psychology John Read. #prescribeddruginfo iipdw.org/psychological-support-psychiatric-drug-withdrawal/

Researchers Address Dangers of Polypharmacy and Inappropriate Medication Use A new special issue brings together articles exploring the harmful effects of simultaneous multiple medication use. In a foreword to Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety’s special issue, “The role of de-prescribing in polypharmacy and inappropriate medication use,” authors Dee Mangin of McMaster University and Doron Garfinkel of Israel Cancer Association, address the insidious and widespread effects of inappropriate medication use and polypharmacy (IMUP). The authors write that the harmful effects of IMUP are well documented and include detrimental influences on physical and mental well-being, the burden of expensive treatments, and problems in mobility. They state that the problem with multiple medication use can be described as “the point when the burden of treatment outweighs the capacity to benefit.” #psychiatry #medication #health care www.madinamerica.com/2019/12/researchers-address-dangers-polypharmacy-inappropriate-medication-use/

Thanks for your support for the Maastricht World Survey on Antipsychotic Medication Withdrawal! I'm writing with an update on the progress with the study. We are continuing to collect data and invite people to take the survey, and are going ahead with data organization and analysis to start preparing for publication. I created a presentation about the study progress, in the form of a video as well as a PDF, to let you know where things are at. Thanks to everyone and thanks especially for your patience with this huge project! Much gratitude to the thousands of people from around the world who have taken the survey, and all the translators and supporters who have been doing work behind the scenes. I'll send another update as we progress. Happy new year -- Will Hall Maastricht University Please check the video presentation here: bit.ly/2QXNVMhand you can download the PDF of the presentation here: bit.ly/2sQOM9I

PETITION UPDATE Coming off psychiatric drugs petition Diane Wright Nottingham, NC, US www.change.org/p/boris-johnson-mp-better-provision-for-people-coming-off-medication/u/2563840323 JAN 2020 — "We need more people like you - aware of the dangers of prolonged use of medication - and you can help them to be made aware. With increasing numbers of prescriptions, more people are at risk of becoming dependent, we should be doing much more to educate and to support those who have followed doctors advice but struggled because of that advice. Share the existing slow moving petition. Query why this is so. Do you have an experience you'd like to share? Maybe you own success at coming off a medication and the difference it made for you. Remember in the UK we have NSUN and many affiliated groups, and others bands of people where support can be found and experiences shared. Now please share the petition and ask each person you ask to share it too. Then the pettion can really flourish such that more and more become aware of the need for attention to reduction of medications for better wellbeing."
