Guess we just have to keep taking the tablets then, since there isn't anything else on offer. It is bloody annoying when the people who caused the condition change their position just to absolve themselves of blame though. It shows the questionable basis of psychiatry; mh diagnoses are interchangeable in a way those considered physical are not. What are we meant to do about the bad treatment? What are we meant to do about the ways the mental health system & psychiatry is? What are we meant to do about the lack of better & more appropriate treatment? What are we meant to do about the way this society / culture / system / 'civilisation' is? Playing Devils Advocate - what is the wider society / system meant to be about people suffering mental illnesses? Most people don't want a different society / system either.

There's a local service user network that recently produced an analysis of local mh care and made recommendations for improving it. I feel that these kinds of initiatives are all good on paper, but I would be very surprised if they are any more than a box ticking exercise, to say that SUs have been consulted. No one listens to the mentally ill, especially not people who have the power to change the system. The wider society and system need changing, but too many are unwilling and disinterested in that; capitalism provides them with 'stuff, and we are too used to being told we need pointless things we really don't. The culture of greed and selfishness is too ingrained nowadays, for anyone to consider something different and more community based. So things are not likely to change.

Go back certainly for the past 400 years & it's all pretty much been the same situation, the same ethical arguments & dissent. Nothing really changes. On a wider level it all goes back thousands of years - certainly 6 thousand years or longer - The Verso Book of Dissent Revolutionary Words from Three Millennia of Rebellion and Resistance Edited by Andrew Hsiao and Audrea Lim Preface by Tariq Ali www.versobooks.com/books/2224-the-verso-book-of-dissentDebt: The First 5000 Years en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt:_The_First_5000_Years

Yes, if new information comes along which leads to more accuracy that is one thing, but trying to change a diagnosis to get out of a hole is something else. Also this business of adding meds rather than a 'lowest dose that works' approach - some websites where people list all the different drugs they are on is enough to make hair curl.

I don't think the world is ready for sharing things, cooperating with each other and looking out for every species on the planet. We're not civilized enough for that, why would we want a future that is healthier for and benefits us all??

Poor rats. Then again we are lab rats most of the time anyway. But at least some of us have a choice.
