A good article. But I think the only people who will realise the truth of it will be those who have been through the system and have suffered a breakdown because of it, and have been through a recovery process. It's a background that not many of those in power, with the real ability to change things, will share.

I don't know how much capitalism played a part in my psychosis. The antipsychotic might not have been prescribed if the drugs companies had not approved them for non psychotic disorders. It is about making as much money as possible so the chances are had they published all the results from all the trials they did it would not have shown any significant difference. But they can publish 2 out of 20 that do, so yes.. capitalism played a part in it.
It is not rocket science that a society that encourages selfishness, alienation, poverty, inequality and destroys communities could increase the rate of mental illness. It leads to lots of people acting in a psychopathic way, and definitely suits those who are psychopaths, but they are not normal. I am not sure if people are actual psychopaths or whether 24 hour rolling news has desensitised us to awful occurences, but it seems like no one cares about anyone else any more. That is going to increase isolation, feelings of loneliness and mental illness. I like to think society should take care of everyone in it and support the vulnerable, but instead everyone is out to better and compete against others.. we are rats on a sinking ship. That is very true of the mentally ill who would be thrown off rather than helped. How sick is a society that thinks that way?
