John Bowlby did talk about attachment but he claimed that babies needed their mothers specifically to grow up healthy. It has been updated since then but he didn't take the father's caregiving skills as important. In reality anyone can be the main attachment figure in fact often that is neither of them.

I was watching some more of Patagonia the BBC documentary yesterday, and there was a very interesting piece on rockhopper penguins who alternate in feeding their chicks... one of the parents goes off to fish while the other takes care of the chick, and they swap around every few days. It must lead to a very interesting attachment dynamic in their families.
