Q: What is the easiest way and most effective way to do atma-vichara, self-inquiry? M: “To always be aware consciously in all situations of the ‘I-am’. No matter what you’re doing where you are be aware of the ‘I-am’ in your heart. This is the most effective practice."
~ Talks with Bhagvan Sri Ramana Maharishi.

"The Ocean cannot stay alone and so the notion of wave is created. When waves rise Ocean loses nothing and when waves fall Ocean gains nothing. Samsara, the illusion, Maya, the play, is the wave on the Ocean of Nirvana. Waves are not separate from the Ocean, rays are not separate from the Sun, You are not separate from Existence-Consciousness-Bliss. This is a reflection of That."

"This body is not me. I am not caught in this body. I am life without limit. I have never been born and I never die.
Look at the ocean and the sky filled with stars, manifestations from my wondrous true mind.
Since beginningless time, I have always been free. Birth and death are only doors through which we pass, sacred thresholds on our journey. Birth and death are a game of hide-and-seek.
So laugh with me, hold my hand, let us say good-bye, say good-bye to meet again.
We meet today, we will meet tomorrow, we meet at the source in every moment, we meet each other in all forms of life."

"Why not surrender right now to the power which knows the way. Make up your mind this night that you're going to give up everything, mentally. You're going to let go of the past, the future, the present, you're doing this right now, this minute. You're letting go of all your fears, all of your frustrations, all of your thinking.
You are no longer concerned what's going to happen to you tomorrow, where you will be, where you won't be. You're not worried about a job, income, people places and things, you have found freedom, absolute freedom. This freedom will take care of you, will guide you, listen to it closely it'll tell you what to do at every turn. This freedom is really you."

What is JNANA YOGA ..?? ........ Is to realise that you don't know anything.. you cannot know anything..life is a mystery, always remains a mystery... Mind is of not much use..you become ready to sacrifice the mind.. Deep down you are always ignorant.. Mind never fulfills your thirst.. It makes you cunning, clever, divided, arrogant, selfish, greedy, jealous.. You throw it and again become innocent like a child.. The ultimate wisdom is to switch off the mind, no thoughts, just silence.. KARMA YOGA It is to understand that what ever you do is not your doing.. It's gods doing.. You cannot say you choose to born nor you can say you choose your death.. You cannot say you breathe because it's a natural process.. You cannot say you digest what you eat..whatever happens, happens on its own.. Till God wills you are alive..whatever actions you do is the actions of the universe through you.. If the breathing stops everything is stopped.. You perform your actions without the sense of doership.. RAJA YOGA Living like a king.. You realise that existence accepts you as you are..it still breathes through you. There is no need for others to accept you. No need to prove your worth.. No need to succeed or become something.. You are already a king.. Dropping all ambitions.. No need even for enlightenment.. Just this moment of life is enough.. Who knows about tomorrow... This realisation is Raja yoga.. Living in the now... You are a king already.. BHAKTI YOGA Surrendering to existence.. Connecting to nature. Gratefulness for the life energy in you.. Knowing that you are in God's hands and even if he kills you that is great.. Feeling that all is God. The food that you eat came from a tree.. The tree had absorbed water, earth, sun, moon, wind and stars.. You are made of the whole universe..accepting all that God gives in life.. Leaving the choice to God. Living without plans.. Just enjoying the beauty of nature is Bhakti yoga.. To realise only God exist.. All attachments are dropped and you accept the whole universe as yours.. To realise that love of human Beigns is not fulfilling.. Only the love for the whole universe fulfills you... A person who has all the four becomes one with nature, God...he transcends mind.. Becomes one with the whole..

Right here and now, you are in the realized state. But you try to judge it through desires and mind concepts, hence your inability to apperceive it and abide in it.

There is a river of thought-waves. Everyone is being washed downstream. Everyone is clinging to these thoughts and being washed away.
Just give rise to the single thought, "I want to be free." This thought will rarely come out of the entire population. The entire population of the planet is moving downstream. They are not destined to give rise to the thought, "I want to be enlightened in this very span of time."
So I call this thought of freedom going against the stream and toward the source. It does not require any effort to give rise to this thought. The thought "I want to be free" is itself free. This thought will take you to freedom. It is the most rare thought. Out of the entire population of 6 billion, only a handful give rise to this thought.

WHEN IN TROUBLE... You can say, "Self, here I am again in trouble. I have no idea what to do next, but you are really me, even though you are all pervading, you are expressing as myself. You know what to do. I therefore, surrender completely to you. I surrender my body, I surrender my affairs, I surrender my world. I have no need to worry or fret. You will take care of everything". And you let go. If you can learn to do this first, before you take any other action, you will be pleasantly surprised what happens.

Questioner: Don't we have to discard all knowledge? Maharaj: You must have a thorough knowledge of this consciousness, and having known everything about the consciousness you come to the conclusion that it is all unreal, and then it should drop off. Having listened to these talks, sit and meditate, "That which I have heard, is it true or not?" Then you will understand that this is also to be discarded. The principle which can pass judgment on whether the world is or is not, that principle antedates the world. That by which everything is known, whether it is or is not - who knows this? When I say Parabrahman, then you say that you understand. Names are merely an instrument for communicating. Do you understand what I am driving at? Q: The jnani knows that this is all an illusion, that there is no path; but if from within the illusion, one is convinced that there is a path, and there's somewhere to go, does it make sense to use techniques to get to that further illusion? M: Illusion - is it a word or not? Q: It's a word that relates to a concept. M: That is also a name only, is it not? Q: Yes. M: So what illusory word do you want that will satisfy you?

The Invisible World October 31, 1991
Om, shanti, shanti, shanti, om, peace.
A jnani has absolutely nothing to do with this world.
The world, the universe, becomes totally meaningless to a sage.
It's not a put on. It's not imagining that all is well until some catastrophe hits you, and then you get upset, become violent, feel sorry for yourself, become depressed. You have to see where you're at, where you're coming from, what you're really made of. You can never know the truth, that there is no world, there is no universe, there is no God, as long as you believe the body suffers, mentally or physically.
Have you suffered mentally or physically today?
If you really want to get on the band wagon, (here goes these clichés again, get on the band wagon) if you really want to become a part of those few people in this world that have transcended the world, you have to do what they did.
The first requisite:
Shut up. Be quiet. Stop debating. Stop arguing. Stop trying to prove a point. Even if someone knows something that you don't, whether they share it with you or not, makes no difference, for you have to come up with your own truth. There's really no one in this universe that can hand you realization on a silver platter.
Number two:
You have to let go. You have to let go so completely that it becomes scary. You have to totally let go mentally. You have to stop depending on person, place or thing for your self worth. You have to start depending on the infinite invisible, on what you cannot see, taste, touch, or smell or feel.
Number three: You must look at the world but never react to anything. You must watch your feelings and your emotions, observe them, and as they come into contact with you, you must become the witness, realizing that you are not those emotions. You are not your bad temper. You are not the depression. You are nothing that goes on in this world.
Number four:
You must develop a tremendous humility, a stupendous humility. This is more important than anything else. If someone tells you something that you don't like to hear you do not become upset. You do not hold it in. You let it go through you and it dissipates, for it has no energy except the energy you give it. You are responsible to yourself. If you fool yourself you're just going to get disgusted in the end and give up all spiritual life, for you'll say you've gotten nowhere, nothing has happened, it doesn't work. It doesn't exist.
I suppose this is the reason I am with you. To tell you “Yes, there is a invisible realm of perfection beyond this world, interpenetrating this world, that makes this world look like kindergarten." Yet you must be able to see it yourself.
Number five:
You have to want it so much that you don't want it. You have to have such a strong desire to be free that all desire stops. When all desire stops there is a quietness, a stillness, that takes place within you. It is only when this stillness, this quietness, comes when you're able to see clearly, not with your physical eyes, but with your spiritual eye, not with your little I, not with the I thought, but with the I am. And you will see in all directions. You will see up, you will see down, you will see sideways, you will see backwards.
The only thing you will see is total perfection which is another name for pure awareness. You have to take this thing seriously and you're not to be serious about this thing at all. You have to reject everything yet you also have to accept everything. You have to surrender and you have to realize that you are the self. There is something inside of you that knows how to do all this. You can help by becoming quiet, by becoming still, by not making a lot of noise, not making a big commotion. Let the world do what it will, yet you become silent and peaceful, compassionate, have humility. Just watch, look, observe, quiet the mind. Be still and know that I am God.

Do not allow your thoughts to go outward. When your thoughts go outward conditions take place. When you keep your thoughts in your heart centered, all of a sudden you find peace, pure happiness it comes by itself. We have to allow the power that we don’t understand to take care of us. This mysterious power knows what your needs are.

The first thing to understand is that everything that has transpired in your life has been necessary. No matter how it looks, no matter what has happened, everything has been necessary. The second thing to understand is, everything has been preordained. In other words, everything was supposed to happen the way it happened. There were no mistakes. The third thing to understand is that the first two things are all a pack of lies, for these things do not even exist in Reality.

Remember the universe is your friend. It's on your side, there's nothing against you. The only thing against you are your thoughts. If you learn to quiet your mind, you'll have no problems.

Someone recently asked a wise Sage why most people don’t want enlightenment ? “Because their minds engage them in the enjoyment of the senses. And they fear giving up the pleasures of the senses. You can probably count on your fingers the number of people who truly want to be free. Everyone is afraid: "I will lose the world, my attachments, my relationships and my dear ones." This is a foolish idea. On the contrary, when you are enlightened you will begin to have really good relationships with everybody, even with the animals and the plant life. You will love everyone. Therefore first enlightenment, then you will be a really good human being.
You might wonder, what pushes us to want freedom ? Good luck. Once a mountain of good merit is accumulated, then you will want to be free. If you miss the opportunity in this life then you will carry it over to the next life until there is a mountain of good merit.
What would you tell someone who does not have the desire for freedom ? How can they accumulate merit ? Those people don´t come to me. If you are looking for diamonds, would you go to a potato shop ?
Never forget that you came into this world without anything and that you will leave this world without anything. Even your much loved body will not go with you at the time of death. The only thing of true value is your spiritual wealth. The only thing that will always accompany you is your spiritual wealth. The way to earn more spiritual wealth is through Satsang, Selfless Service and Deep Meditation.
The last obstacle in meditation is ecstasy. You are experiencing great bliss and happiness and you want to remain in that ecstasy. Don't give in to it, but move on to the next phase which is the great calm. Calm is higher than ecstasy and blends into samadhi. Samadhi is the fruit of meditation. In Samadhi (super-consciousness) you experience super-sensual Bliss and Knowledge. There is the complete enjoyment of Divine Ecstasy and only universal cosmic unity, in which the inner universe and the outer universe merge into one infinite reality. There is absolute calmness, absolute peace, absolute knowledge and absolute love. All dualities disappear and imperfections no longer exist. Samadhi cannot be described in words, it can only be experienced. In this complete contentment, there are no desires, no doubts and no delusions. All distinctions of this and that are removed. All impurities in the heart center are destroyed and the higher state of Samadhi (Nirvikalpa Samadhi) is experienced. In the lower state of Samadhi (Savikalpa Samadhi) the latent impressions (vasanas or impurities) are loosened but are not destroyed. So the freedom and bliss of Savikalpa Samadhi is only temporary. Only Nirvikalpa Samadhi will give complete and everlasting knowledge, freedom, bliss and peace. You will have peace in every movement of your body, peace in your thinking and peace in your love. You will know without a shadow of a doubt that you have connected God with your life. Jivanmukta is liberation while still in a physical body. In this State the afflictions of all karmas have been removed and the Yogi becomes ever free and shines in his or her own glory. It is said that in this State the Yogi sees without eyes, tastes without tongue, hears without ears, smells without nose and touches without skin. His or her mere intention can work miracles. The Yogi simply wills it and everything comes into being.”
