When the mind in the form of the ego, which takes the body for the Self and strays outwards, is curbed within the Heart the sense of ‘I’ in the body relinquished, and enquiry made with a still mind as to who it is that dwells in the body, a subtle illumination will be experienced as ‘I-I’ which is no other than the Absolute, the Self, seated in the lotus of the Heart, in the city of the body, the tabernacle of God. Then one should remain still, with the conviction that the Self shines as everything yet nothing, within, without, and everywhere, and is also the transcendental Being. This is known as meditation on the Truth conveyed by the dictum ‘Sivoham’, ‘I am Siva’ and is also called the Fourth State.

A wise Sage once said: “To him, who is perfect in meditation, Salvation is very near.” How do we know when a man becomes perfect in meditation? When, on sitting down to meditate, he becomes immediately surrounded with a Divine atmosphere and his soul communes with God.
There occurs deep concentration in meditation, when nothing else can be seen or heard. Even perceptions and feelings disappear. A snake may crawl over the body, but one does not feel it. Neither the person meditating nor the snake has any feeling of each other.
In deep meditation all the functions of the senses are inhibited. The outward flow of the mind comes to a dead stop, as if the door of the outer apartment is closed. All the five objects of the senses - light, sound, taste, touch and smell - lie outside unperceived. At first, visions of sense objects appear before the mind during meditation, but when it becomes deep, they never rise at all - they lie outside, debarred.
Everything depends on the mind. Nothing can be achieved without purity of mind. When you purify your mind you will reach the ultimate goal of Prema-bhakti, which is Ecstatic Love for the Divine. Mind is just consciousness which has put on limitations. You are originally unlimited and perfect. Realize that there is no you, only the state of freedom. Be that. Be free like the sky. Be still like the hill. Accept change like the seasons. Be silent like complete emptiness. You are that.
In Kriya Yoga we learn the importance of Kriya Pranayama because breath is not only the cause of life but it also brings about quality of living too. As is the breath, so is the mind and as is the mind, so is the person. The mind is the lord of all the senses. The breath is the controller of the mind. So breath control will lead you to mind control and finally to liberation. The secret is that the Union with God (Yoga) can never happen unless the mind is rendered absolutely calm, whatever be the path you follow for God-realisation. The mind is always under the control of a real Yogi and not the Yogi under the control of his mind. For a human being, the mind has fundamental importance. The mind determines a person's birth and also his actions. When the mind is there, a person is an ordinary human being. But when the mind has been transcended, a person becomes a great being, a saint.”

“Whatever plane our consciousness may be acting in, both we and the things belonging to that plane are, for the time being, our only realities. As we rise in the scale of development we perceive that during the stages through which we have passed we mistook shadows for realities, and the upward progress of the Ego is a series of progressive awakenings, each advance bringing with it the idea that now, at last, we have reached "reality"; but only when we shall have reached the absolute Consciousness, and blended our own with it, shall we be free from the delusions produced by Maya [illusion].”

A wise Sage once said: “One who knows the Self and becomes Self Realized crosses the worldly ocean and attains supreme Bliss. The worldly ocean is a place of death and suffering. Thus, crossing the worldly ocean means that one has overcome all the sufferings of the world. This state is called dukha nivritti, which means freedom from all sufferings and the complete elimination of all negatives from life. Through the practice of meditation all impurity or negativity will eventually disappear and purity or brilliance will manifest. When misery ends, the true nature of the soul, the blissful state manifests. When no more clouds cover the sky, the brightness of the sun is visible. This is called paramananda prapti, which is the attainment of everlasting and supreme Bliss. To attain the state of Oneness requires supreme sacrifice and dispassion. So let compassion fill and overflow in you. Let go of the heavy burden of your ego. When you renounce that burden you will rise to that plane of supreme Bliss and complete perfection. Knowing this, break the barriers of your ego, shed selfishness, free yourself from the consciousness of the body, forget yourself, do away with this prison house of incarnations, melt your heart in all and become one with creation.............”

"This one question “What do I know for certain?" is tremendously powerful. When you look deeply into this question, it actually destroys your world. It destroys your whole sense of self, and it's meant to. You come to see that everything you think you know about yourself, everything you think you know about the world, is based on assumptions, beliefs, and opinions, things you believe because you were taught or told that they were true. Until we start to see these false perceptions for what they really are, consciousness will be imprisoned within the dream state."

An Analysis of the Truth. Those who show great care and love for their bodies, while saying that they are trying to know Self, are like one who tries to cross a river, mistaking a crocodile for a log. Instead of attending to Sat-Chit-Ananda, the subtlest, which is beyond the reach of speech or mind, to spend one’s life attending merely to the welfare of the gross body is just like drawing water with great difficulty from a well in order to water some useless grass [instead of paddy]. Those who take to the petty life, mistaking the body as ‘I’, have lost, so to speak, the great life of unlimited Bliss in the Heart, which is ever waiting to be experienced by them. Not knowing that the world in front of them brings only great harm, those who take it to be real and a source of happiness will drown in the ocean of birth and death, like one who takes hold of a floating bear as a raft. Sadhu Om: If someone has caught hold of a floating bear, without knowing its true nature but hoping that it will serve as a raft, he will find it very difficult to leave it, even when he has discovered his mistake, since the bear will also have caught hold of him; similarly, even though someone has heard from the Guru that the world is a false appearance, he finds it very difficult to leave it aside, because of the tendencies of attraction which he created by his great desire for it, when he took it to be real. Such is the strength of the mind’s attachment to this world! - The teachings of Sri Ramana Maharishi.

There are 3 points to remember... ------------------------------------------ If you remember these 3 points, you will already be awakened. You have to remember these 3 points in your heart. By assimilating these 3 points, by digesting them, by becoming a living embodiment of these 3 points, you will become Consciousness, Pure Awareness, which you already are. The first point is: --------------------- Whatever befalls your body or your mind, remember that is not happening to you. The second point is: -------------------------- All of your karmas, your samskaras, your sins of omission, commission, the sinful acts that you are responsible for, none of these things can touch you, if you center yourself in the HERE and NOW. The HERE and NOW is Omnipresence. The HERE and NOW is All-Pervading, Omniscient. The HERE and NOW is Consciousness. The HERE and NOW is Boundless Space, Effortless, Choiceless, Pure Awareness. When you hold onto the HERE and NOW, when you identify with HERE and NOW, the past is no longer valid. There is no past, there is no future in the HERE and NOW. There is I AM. There is the Ultimate Reality, Ultimate Oneness, and You Are That. When you are living in the HERE and NOW, your karmas do not exist any longer, samskaras stop dead in their trachs, sins are abated, you are born again, so to speak. You become the new man, the new woman. You are free. The third point is: ---------------------- You have absolutely nothing to give up. Nothing to surrender. Nothing to let go of. You are already liberated. ❤ Robert Adams - Silence of the Heart.🕉

A disciple was leaving his Master. It was a dark night and it had become late. The disciple was a little apprehensive because he had to pass five miles of dense forest to reach to his village. The Master saw that fear. He said, "Are you afraid of the darkness?" The disciple said, "Yes, I am afraid, but I couldn't gather courage to say so." The Master said, "Don't be afraid." And the Master lit a candle, gave the candle to the disciple, and said, "This will do.You go." When the disciple was going out of the door, the Master suddenly blew the candle out. The disciple said, "I don't understand what you have done. Just a moment before you lit the candle for me with such compassion. Now why are you so cruel? Why have you blown it out?" The Master laughed. He said, "My candle will not be of much use to you." Buddha has said: APPO DEEPO BHAVA -- 'Be a light unto yourself.' "The night is dark, I know, and I would like to help you in every way; but I cannot do anything that is impossible. Only your light will help you in the dark night, so rely on yourself. Go with my blessings. Go into the dark night with my blessings. Rely on your own consciousness. Remain alert, let that be your light, because nobody else's light can help you."

The essence of mind is only awareness or consciousness. When the ego, however, dominates it, it functions as the reasoning, thinking or sensing faculty. The cosmic mind being not limited by the ego, has nothing separate from itself and is therefore only aware. This is what the Bible means by “I am that I AM”. The ego-ridden mind has its strength sapped and is too weak to resist the torturing thoughts. The egoless mind is happy in deep, dreamless sleep. Clearly therefore Bliss and misery are only modes of mind.

Your job is to relax, to take it easy, to be peaceful. To observe, to watch, to look, never to react. As you begin to go deeper within yourself, whatever you need to know will be revealed to you. Whatever you have to do will be done. Yet what you really are has absolutely nothing to do with these things. Your true nature, Brahman, absolute intelligence, pure wisdom, sat-chit-ananda, is always available. It is always there. You are that. To see your true self, and to feel your true self, and to be your true self, you simply have to negate everything else in this world. By negate everything in this world, I mean you have to look at a situation and never react to it, and realize this is not you. Good things, bad things, whatever you call good and bad, they're all the same. They are not you. You are not that. You are absolute freedom. You have nothing to do with anything. The world appears like a dream. It comes and it goes. You know by now that everything is subject to the law of change in this world, in this universe. Everything is going to change whether you like it or not. Why be disappointed? Why be upset? Change is the nature of living, yet what you really are, your real nature, can never change. Identify with your real self. Again, how do you do this? By not identifying with the world. When you do not identify with person, place or thing, you are automatically identifying with yourself, and then you become your self. In other words you become your self by not being yourself. You have to awaken, now. And let go of the dream world. Many of you are so concerned with your future. You're so worried about your past. You have all sorts of plans in your mind. You're conditioned to believe this, to believe that. This is what is keeping you back from waking up. You must let go, in its entirety, of any hold the world has on you. You have to stand naked before God. In the last analyses you have to be your self without the help of books, teachers, systems, governments, religions. You have to step out of that rut of your conditioning. Become totally unconditioned, as if you were just born. Reading too many books simply adds to the confusion. As you begin to dive deep within yourself, without the help from books, from teachers, you make mistakes in the beginning. As you learn to dive deeper within yourself, as you learn to go within, those mistakes are good, for they push you forward. Never judge yourself. Never put yourself down. Never believe that this is too hard for you, or you have too much bad karma, or something is holding you back. Nothing can be further from the truth. The only thing that is holding you back are your thoughts. Get rid of your thoughts and you'll be home free. Quiet your mind. Keep yourself still and leave the world alone. When I say leave the world alone it becomes confusing somewhat. I mean mentally. Keep your mind empty and your body will do things that it came to this earth to do. Your body will not sit still all the time and do nothing. But you can be still in your mind and be thought free. No judgments, no fears, no bewilderment, no apprehensions. Not thinking about tomorrow, forgetting about yesterday, living in the now. Being spontaneous and leaving the world alone.

You are unconditioned and changeless, formless and immovable, unfathomable awareness, unperturbable: so hold to nothing but consciousness. 1.17
Recognize that the apparent is unreal, while the unmanifest is abiding. Through this initiation into truth you will escape falling into unreality again. 1.18

I have a sister who believes that the world is about to end in a nuclear holocaust. Many other people feel the same. Does Swami have any views on this? Annamalai Swami: I do not think that the world will be destroyed in the near future. But even if it is about to be destroyed it is not something that you should think about or worry about. Keep your attention in the present; keep it on the Self. If you establish yourself in the Self you need not worry about the future of the world. If you realize the Self, nothing can touch you. You can destroy a jnani’s body, you can destroy the world that he lives in, but you cannot touch or change his Self-awareness. The disappearance of the entire universe will not affect the jnani because jnana is indestructible. Consciousness, the substratum of the universe, cannot be changed in any way. When the world appears in consciousness, consciousness doesn’t undergo any change. So, even when the universe disappears, consciousness is unaffected. Everything that appears will one day disappear. There is no permanence in the world of forms. But that unchangeable consciousness in which all forms appear can never be diminished, destroyed or altered in any way. If you learn to be that consciousness you come to understand that nothing can touch or destroy you. … Ignorance causes us to worry about the possible destruction of the body. If you make your well-being dependent on the well-being of the body, you will always be worrying and suffering. When you know, from direct experience, that you are the Self, you realize that there is no birth and death. You realize that you are deathless and immortal. Self-realization is sometimes called the immortal state because it never ends and because it is never destroyed or even altered. If you keep your attention on the Self you can attain this immortality. If you attain it, in that ultimate state of being you will find that there is no birth, no death, no desires, no fears, no worries, no mind and no world.

I want to let you in on a little secret. There are no problems. There are no problems. There never were any problems, there are no problems today, and there will never be any problems. Problems just mean that the world isn't turning the way you want it to. But in truth, there are no problems. Everything is unfolding as it should. Everything is right. You have to forget about yourself and expand your consciousness until you become the whole universe. The Reality in back of the universe is Pure Awareness. It has no problems. And you are That.

To integrate and strengthen the mind is not an easy task! How does one begin? M: You can start only from where you are. You are here and now, you cannot get out of here and now. Q: But what can I do here and now? M: You can be aware of your being — here and now. Q: That is all? M: That is all. There is nothing more to it. Q: All my waking and dreaming I am conscious of myself. It does not help me much. M: You were aware of thinking, feeling, doing. You were not aware of your being. Q: What is the new factor you want me to bring in? M: The attitude of pure witnessing, of watching the events without taking part in them. Q: What will it do to me? M: Weak-mindedness is due to lack of intelligence, of understanding, which again is the result of non-awareness. By striving for awareness you bring your mind together and strengthen it. Q: I may be fully aware of what is going on, and yet quite unable to influence it in any way. M: You are mistaken. What is going on is a projection of your mind. A weak mind cannot control its own projections. Be aware, therefore, of your mind and its projections. You cannot control what you do not know. On the other hand, knowledge gives power. In practice it is very simple. To control yourself —know yourself. Q: Maybe, I can come to control myself, but shall I be able to deal with the chaos in the world? M: There is no chaos in the world, except the chaos which your mind creates. It is self-created in the sense that at its very centre is the false idea of oneself as a thing different and separate from other things. In reality you are not a thing, nor separate. You are the infinite potentiality, the inexhaustible possibility. Because you are, all can be. The universe is but a partial manifestation of your limitless capacity to become.
