ANGIE SPEAKS, EPISODE 12: JORDAN PETERSON, JUNGIAN ARCHETYPES, AND MASCULINITY What explains the popularity of far-right academic Jordan Peterson? Is it possible he’s a monster the Left helped create? And what about his usage of Jungian psychology and his sharp appeal to disaffected men? Angie tackles all these questions with an eye towards not just how to combat the ideas of people like Peterson, but how to reclaim the ideological territory that the far-right steals. "Peterson may seem the latest in a long line of eggheads pretentiously but harmlessly romancing the noble savage. But it is worth remembering that Jung recklessly generalized about the superior “Aryan soul” and the inferior “Jewish psyche” and was initially sympathetic to the Nazis. Mircea Eliade was a devotee of Romania’s fascistic Iron Guard. Campbell’s loathing of “Marxist” academics at his college concealed a virulent loathing of Jews and blacks. Solzhenitsyn, Peterson’s revered mentor, was a zealous Russian expansionist, who denounced Ukraine’s independence and hailed Vladimir Putin as the right man to lead Russia’s overdue regeneration. Peterson rails today against “softness,” arguing that men have been “pushed too hard to feminize.” In his bestselling book Degeneration (1892), the Zionist critic Max Nordau amplified, more than a century before Peterson, the fear that the empires and nations of the West are populated by the weak-willed, the effeminate, and the degenerate. The French philosopher Georges Sorel identified myth as the necessary antidote to decadence and spur to rejuvenation. An intellectual inspiration to fascists across Europe, Sorel was particularly nostalgic about the patriarchal systems of ancient Israel and Greece. Like Peterson, many of these hyper-masculinist thinkers saw compassion as a vice and urged insecure men to harden their hearts against the weak (women and minorities) on the grounds that the latter were biologically and culturally inferior. Hailing myth and dreams as the repository of fundamental human truths, they became popular because they addressed a widely felt spiritual hunger: of men looking desperately for maps of meaning in a world they found opaque and uncontrollable." www.nybooks.com/daily/2018/03/19/jordan-peterson-and-fascist-mysticism/

Here's another anti-Peterson argument for your collection. It gets quite explicit about Peterson's fascism. "Peterson is explicitly targeting young White males for indoctrination with an insidious political ideology he calls radical individualism. He has created a pseudo-religion self-help cult; he is delivering his ideology to the disaffected youth by combining it with a self-help regimen wrapped in empty religious metaphor." www.eurocanadian.ca/2019/01/video-of-week-jordan-peterson-dismantled.html

The subtle art of not giving a fuck about Jordan B Peterson "Last year the psychiatrist blogger Scott Alexander coined the term ‘Anton-Wilsonism’ in honour of Robert Anton Wilson, a sci-fi/occult/conspiracy theory writer most famous for the Illuminatus Trilogy. You don’t hear about him so much anymore but he was big in the 1990s, at least among the incredibly nerdy subcultures I moved in. Anton Wilson had this storytelling technique where he would talk about, say, the history of the United States and tie it in with the Freemasons and the Illuminati and H P Lovecraft and George Washington smoking pot and the social construction of money and occult symbols on the one dollar bill, and the assassinations of Lincoln and Kennedy, and you would come out of it thinking: Wow! Not only do I now understand everything about US history, I understand it all in a deep way that those brainwashed idiots who’ve studied it for years can’t even begin to imagine. Obviously you didn’t actually understand anything, other than a lot of very tenuous bullshit, but you felt like you did. I think this is a very seductive technique, especially for a certain type of guy who wants to understand the world in a way that elevates them over everyone else, and I think Peterson is the master of Anton-Wilsonism. When people read him on, say, evolution inventing gender during the Proterozoic era because of the Taoist dichotomy of Yin and Yang, Jungian archetypes which align to chaos and order, and thus men and women are fundamentally different because of primordial hormones, they feel like he’s letting them in on the deep secrets of existence, while I think most people who read Peterson’s work come out of it understanding even less about gender and evolution and human endocrinology than they knew going in. And I think that sense of ersatz enlightenment is a lot of what you pay for when you buy his ticket." thespinoff.co.nz/books/18-02-2019/the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-fuck-about-jordan-b-peterson/

I haven't ever really given a fuck about Jordan B Peterson, but then I suppose I am not his target audience.. am guessing it just means people who already thought like him now have an 'intellectual' to back up their theories and it gives them more confidence to spout abuse on social media.
