It feels like we are living in a “me generation” – a generation of people characterized by selfish materialism. Are people, more than ever, pre-occupied with themselves and only out for what they can get at the expense of others? Is social media partly to blame for this, or are other factors the main cause? Are we losing sight of our social responsibility to others? Or perhaps we have been persuaded by news stories that tell us we are in the grip of a growing epidemic of narcissism? In a question time style event, researchers from different disciplines are invited to discuss these and other related topics under the theme “Is society becoming more narcissistic?”. We will have four expert panellists drawn from different disciplines, each of which will give a very short presentation on how they would answer the question, and then they will take questions from the audience chaired by the host Dr Magda Osman, psychologist, and head of the Centre for Mind in Society at Queen Mary University of London. The panellists include: Professor Paul Heritage (English and Drama) Dr Yasmin Ibrahim (Management) Dr Mark Freestone (Psychiatry) Dr Jay Watts (Psychiatry) www.facebook.com/events/1914393175263673/?ti=as

Or perhaps we have been persuaded by news stories that tell us we are in the grip of a growing epidemic of narcissism? i think that we are in a crisis of 'civilisation'. An Age of the Ego / Materialism / the complete dominance of the banking / corporate / political / media / exoteric religious / Atheist scientism materialist system & other elites. i can't see how it's all sustainable? The ecological crisis alone, if left to continue, & it may already be too late, will collapse this 'civilisation'. i don't think that a majority of people care or really understand the problem. All i mainly hear is things like i'm too busy to look at it all, i don't understand any of it, there is Nothing anyone can do about it all, don't look at anything negative, everything will be fine, endless distractions, denials & ignorance around it all. The thing is that i know if / when there is a major global crisis the general opinions will all be totally different - really when it seriously effects people - that seems to be how most people operate, especially in the 'West'. i don't think things will change within the current dominant generations, & certainly not with the baby boomers, they are a sociopathic generation. i wonder really if we are beyond a stage now where anything really can be done about it all? i have a feeling that future humanity will despise the current generations for what they have done, especially over the past 40 years, & it's consequences.

I can't see there being anyone left to hate current generations to be honest.
The narcissistic society, people only caring when it affects them, is part of the problem. Not everyone in the world is currently equally affected by global warming. It's easy for some to stick their head in the sand.. for now. It will be too late when it comes to their door.

No one knows what the future will be on this planet. i have been apocalyptic about things for a long time, but everything grinds on year on year.
