“The medicine is found within the wound.”
Chiron (Sagittarius) is a teacher and healer. “Chiron” means “hand” and it’s where we get the word “chiropractor” (to heal by hand).
Chiron was unlike other centaurs. Chiron was famous for his wisdom and knowledge. He was the teacher of the strongest and most epic heroes including; Hercules, Achilles, Jason and Odysseus. Chiron was even the teacher of the god of medicine himself; Asclepius.
Chiron was abandoned by his mother. She was seduced by Cronus who had turned himself into a horse to gain her favor. So when she gave birth to a centaur (half human and half horse) she was horrified and abandoned the child which she called a monster. Being abandoned, Chiron was forced to teach himself how to understand the world and how to navigate it successfully alone, without anyone to guide him. This abandonment was his first wound.
His second wound was acquired in battle. Chiron was accidentally pierced with a poisonous spear by his own student Hercules. After suffering much pain, he eventually figured out how to heal the wound using the sciences of ancient medicine and botany, and the pharmacology of herbs.
Chiron occupies the archetype of the “wounded healer.” No one could save him, so he saved himself, and with the knowledge he gained from these experiences he healed others and counseled them with his wisdom.
Chiron’s most noble act was the bargain he made for Prometheus. Prometheus sacrificed his life to give humankind fire and was being punished for it. Chiron, having been born an immortal demigod, gave up his immortality so that Prometheus could go free. The next time Chiron was struck by an arrow, he could not heal his own wound and he died like a regular mortal.
Zeus administered Prometheus’ punishment in the first place, and being Chiron’s half brother, felt pity for what happened to Chiron. To honor Chiron, Zeus placed him in the stars and he became known as the constellation Centaurus. 🏹
