Did you know that the famous and wonderful spiritual teacher ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ, has retired from teaching for various reasons, one of which is PTSD symptoms and anxiety disorder for which he is taking psychiatric pills?
Adya shared in a lovely podcast his experience and quite in length about the many many sincere students of his who came to him during his many years of teaching, worried and concerned about them taking psychiatric meds and the fear that those would stand in their way to Self-Realization. He spoke in length about how the hardest part for him in dealing with the PTSD is actually the mental part and how grateful he is for the support he gets.
Why am I mentioning Adyashanti?
Because Adya has reached a distinguishable high level of liberation and spiritual realization, and yet, he is helped by psychiatric medication and receives therapeutic support to deal with mental suffering and anxiety caused by PTSD.
I too am taking psychiatric meds that help me with an anxiety disorder. And yet both Adya and I are Dharma teachers who without a doubt have depth of realization, a true and alive energy field and are helping many people (Adya definitely has a higher and more complete realization than myself).
So what's with all that pill-shaming?
It's time we understand that in the same way that we can take life-long medication against high blood pressure or diabetes, we can have a propensity towards mental imbalances. And these, if too acute, require the mitigation enabled by medication.
It's important to never be arrogant and dismissive or belittling of those who need psychiatric meds and pretend that you'll never need them. Truth is, you don't know. Also, to assume that someone cannot hold the complexity of being both deeply rooted in spirit and grace yet still dealing with mental issues, is too rigid an assumption and in factual reality is not true. Period.
Does this mean there is no level of spiritual realization where mental suffering is not possible anymore? I do not know. Perhaps there is. I would never try to belittle the great claims of Supreme spiritual masters, and of my own spiritual teacher, of having attained a perfect state of enlightenment, free of all karmic seeds.
But in the here and now, I'm respectful of where I and many others stand. I respect deeply the mental health challenges and the obvious need to use the wonderful assistance of psychiatric meds. And in the same breath, fully honor, see and acknowledge the authentic spiritual realization attained and embodied in me and many other serious practitioners who use psychiatric meds (like Adyashanti).
Adyashanti by the way, in his last podcast, took much time to reassure all sincere practitioners out there, that taking psychiatric pills will not impede their self-realization.
So take this post as a support on your spiritual path and an encouragement to accept whatever you are going through without canceling the good about you and without hesitating to use whatever means it takes to heal and deal with hardships and challenges.
