We acted on acid rain and ozone depletion within a market economy framework. The real problem, in my view, isn’t the nature of our economic system, it’s the way that special interests and plutocrats have blocked the sort of common-sense market approaches to dealing with environmental problems that were once supported by democrats and republicans alike. "It has been a while since I have shared science-based articles on the implications of global warming in this group. I am surprised on how little impact the recent article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) discussed in the shared post has had on discussion here. Perhaps it is time some of the doubters in this group took the science seriously and considered its implications for the futures of your family and descendents.... Rather than leading with any of the hundreds of "news" items this article generated, my post begins with the original scientific report. Climate is a complex dynamical, non-linear and (mathematically) chaotic system that is impossible to predict in any exact way. However, we understand components of the system well enough to know that there are several positive feedback loops that have the potential for chaotic and catastrophic (also a mathematical term) behavior leading to a situation of runaway warming in the Arctic. Because chaotic systems are mathematically intractable, it is not possible calculate precise probabilities that any particular scenario will/will not happen, but given that runaway warming would probably end human civilization as we know it, the risk must be considered to be existential. The authors of the PNAS article summarize the evidence for their concerns on this matter. To them the choice is stark - continue our competition to see who can build their power the fastest by degrading our biosphere with their greenhouse gas emissions - until the we have a climate catastrophe and the biosphere collapses; or else we can learn to use our knowledge and science as stewards of the Earth System by cooperating to husband and manage our resources. To do this we must replace our governments around the world that are dominated by the willing tools of the fossil fuel special interests with people who have a genuine understanding of biological systems, complexity, and the physical sciences necessary to understand and lead moderation, mitigation and remediation actions to work towards sustainable stewardship..... Crossing the threshold would lead to a much higher global average temperature than any interglacial in the past 1.2 million years and to sea levels significantly higher than at any time in the Holocene. We examine the evidence that such a threshold might exist and where it might be. If the threshold is crossed, the resulting trajectory would likely cause serious disruptions to ecosystems, society, and economies. Collective human action is required to steer the Earth System away from a potential threshold and stabilize it in a habitable interglacial-like state. Such action entails stewardship of the entire Earth System—biosphere, climate, and societies—and could include decarbonization of the global economy, enhancement of biosphere carbon sinks, behavioral changes, technological innovations, new governance arrangements, and transformed social values. ...
