MAKING ROOM FOR THE FUTURE
... It is no coincidence that the signs of ethical and social decay of our civilization – including organized crime, political corruption, misery, wars, and terrorist attacks – occur at the same time as deforestation, environmental pollution, and climate change. The truth is that spirit and matter evolve together: throughout history, every time man's greed caused him to destroy his natural environment, he himself ended up paying dearly for it.
When writing in 1879 about the effects of deforestation on India, for example, H. P. Blavatsky says:
"A quick look through the pages of history already shows that the ruin and definitive extinction of national power follows deforestation, as certain as night follows day." Nature has provided the means for human development, and her laws can never be broken without disaster. ” [1]
Environmentalists and those who study esoteric philosophy know that everything on the planet is inter-related.
On the other hand, we also see that having access to information is not the same as having knowledge. The difference between knowledge and information is that knowledge leads to correct action, but mere information does not.
Thus, to answer the question about our responsibility regarding the fate of current civilization, we will have to begin by examining a previous, also uncomfortable, questioning:
“How much direct knowledge do we have about esoteric philosophy? "
The importance of this is that only direct knowledge provokes a lasting sense of responsibility, free from vanity or messianism.
An accurate perception of things, deeply felt, produces a sense of ethics and an active intention to be helpful. Perhaps it was to highlight the significance of this sense of personal responsibility that Thomas Taylor, the neoplatonic philosopher, wrote centuries ago:
“A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Drink up or don't prove the PLATONIC fountain;
In her, small shots poison the brain,
And drinking deeply makes us sober again. "[2]
The responsibility that emerges from deep knowledge makes us sober again – because it leads us into action, external and internal.
When students have a natural and spontaneous sense of responsibility based on what they are learning, then the right time arises for a growing number of them to begin thinking, calmly and quietly, about two questions:
1) According to esoteric philosophy, time is circular, or cyclic. He goes on a spiral. How can we assess the current moment of our civilization, from the point of view of this doctrine of cycles or eras?
2) What is the relationship between the emergence of a new cycle of human time and the growing difficulties faced by so many countries in the first part of the 21st century?
Maybe we can get only a few snippets of the answer – but that's absolutely no reason to give up. Patiently researching the matter and sharing our efforts can be useful to the cause of the good of humanity and ourselves. Every aspirant of truth must start from the fragments within his reach. Sooner or later intuition and common sense can help you fill in the blanks. As time goes by, Karma and those who know more than we do tend to ease our task in many ways visible and invisible.
