Full Incompetence www.thevenusproject.com/multimedia/full-incompetence/"At present, people are not well enough informed to devise a relevant and workable social system through rational methods. The Venus Project will not be installed by today’s political leaders who are not appointed to change things but to keep things as they are. It is only through the failure of existing social institutions and political incompetence that people will seek other possible social alternatives. They are mainly motivated only by severe conditions that threaten their safety and existence."

"As of 1970, keeping track of all the environment controlling, all the logistics of thinking about total planet--for Spaceship Earth, in 1970, we passed a threshold where it could be demonstrated, engineering-wise, that if we took all the metals going into armaments and put them into what you call livingry, instead of killingry, that within a design revolution of only ten years we could have all humanity living at a higher standard of living than anybody had ever known, on a completely sustainable basis, while phasing out forever all further use of fossil fuels and atomic energy. We could live entirely on our energy income. Now this is absolutely clear in 1970, we passed that threshold. For the first time in history, I knew it Obsolete did not have to be you or me! That war was obsolete." ~Buckminster Fuller www.bfi.org/about-fuller/resources/articles-transcripts/earthians-critical-moment

IMPORTANT: Freeworlder is changing! A message from the founder:
Hi everyone and thank you so much for being a part of Freeworlder.
This project, in all its versions, has consumed quite a few years of my life since 2013 in terms of building, funding and getting people to use it. It’s been an amazing experience, and I have learned much from it. So much, in fact, that I actually came to realise that an entirely different approach was needed!
So, Freeworlder is about to change dramatically! More on this later, but I would like to tell you what has brought about this decision.
With consistently poor engagement, I had to face the fact that there just wasn't enough interest in the Freeworlder site to achieve anything close to what I considered a 'threshold of usefulness' - that is, when there are enough listings on the site to make it truly useful and self-propagating. Though I always knew this would take time, I have to concede that, with just 300 transactions recorded since the launch of this version three years ago, it’s not going to happen on our current trajectory.
So, what's wrong?
Put simply, I think our site is aimed at the wrong type of people. Not that we are bad people of course - but there just aren't enough of us to make it work.
Consider this: of the tiny minority of people who want a money-free world, only a small minority know about Freeworlder, of which only a small minority join, of which only a small minority actively use it, etc. You get the idea. This leaves us with literally a handful of people who, even with the best of intentions, are just not enough to get us anywhere near that magic threshold.
Don't get me wrong, 300 transactions is good considering the small number of people involved - and that gives me hope - but it's not enough to warrant myself and others maintaining the site at this level - never mind coming anywhere close to challenging the economic status quo!
So we need to adapt!
Sharing goods and services is, to me, an absolutely vital part of the change we need to bring, and we need a great site with a broad appeal to facilitate that. So, on April 14th, Freeworlder.com will be closing and all members and listings will be automatically transferred to our brand new site Sharebay with a fresh new look and approach.
Sharebay.org will have many features in common with Freeworlder, but some important differences. Most notably, it won't be linked to any particular train of thought (like FWC, RBE, etc). It will just be promoted as a simple utility for anyone to get or borrow things they need - and contribute if they wish. Also, elements of the site will be specifically purposed for helping those most in need. (This is part in response to the current Covid-19 crisis and the inevitable economic uncertainty that's coming, where sites like Sharebay could provide a much needed lifeline)
The overarching idea is that Sharebay will be accessible to a much larger potential audience to bring the idea of sharing to many more people.
Here's the key changes:
- New name, logo and URL - Simplified registration process - Simplified skill-offering system - Emergency aid listings possible without sign-up - Lend and borrow listings - Accommodation listings - New feature listing home page - Links to The Free World Charter will be removed from map and registration - Log in with social media - New users offered the chance to post items and skills on registration - Publicly visible transaction history - iTags will be replaced with 'interests' - Improved, smarter outgoing mailer - Many site bugs and design issues resolved
(NB. Some changes will happen straight away, others will be added over the next months)
If you're happy to migrate your Freeworlder profile and listings to Sharebay.org, then great, there's nothing you need to do! Your profile and listings will be transferred automatically on April 14th and you'll be able to log in to Sharebay with the same email and password that you used for Freeworlder. Also, links to the Freeworlder site will be automatically forwarded to Sharebay.
If you do not wish to migrate your account and listings to Sharebay.org, then you can opt out using the link in the email that has been sent out. Watch out for it in the next few days.
Thank you everyone for being a vital part of this important journey and see you on the other side!
All the best, Colin R. Turner Founder, Sharebay.org

Thinking in Systems for Global Well-Being: A Thought on the COVID19 Pandemic www.thevenusproject.com/multimedia/thinking_in_systems_for_global_well-being_a_thought_on_the_covid19_pandemic/Thinking in Systems for Global Well-Being: A Thought on the COVID19 Pandemic by Theofilos Chaldezos A common enemy is not only at our door, but could infiltrate in through our loved ones. All that people can do now is to take desperate preventive measures to mitigate the threat of a violent intruder possibly devastating their lives. We are observing governments around the world reacting erratically to the threat, because the system we currently live in is far too overconfident and underprepared for events such as these. A healthcare system that focuses on supporting the sick, instead of being integrated and interacting with every part of the system we live in (keeping healthy people healthy), will only be able to have a weak reactive stance rather than a vigorous preventive one. Historically speaking we have improved through the years in awareness and vaccines, but … still not good enough…. Why?

Founded in 2008, The Zeitgeist Movement (TZM) is a sustainability and public health advocacy organisation. It conducts research and activism through a network of regional chapters, public events and various forms of educational media. The focus includes recognising that the majority of the modern world’s social problems, including mounting ecological crises and destabilising economic inequality (oppression, poverty, conflict, corruption, etc.) is not an inevitable outcome of our civilisation. Rather, TZM sees these issues as consequential symptoms of an outdated social system. While common reforms and general community support to improve conditions are of interest to TZM, working to galvanise the population in a move to change the very nature of our social system itself is the goal. In this, a central criticism has been in addressing the inefficient nature of market-based economics or capitalism itself. TZM concludes that without a dramatic move away from the incentives and structural dynamics of the market system, there is little hope today for further, relevant improvements in the areas of human rights, ecological sustainability and general public health. Supporters refer to the model promoted by TZM as a “Natural-Law Resource-Based Economy”. This model is inferential, derived from modern principles of scientific, sustainable earthly management, along with contemporary findings in social and epidemiological research. TZM’s interest in change is global. It has no allegiance to country or traditional political platforms. It views the world as a single system and the human species as a single family. It recognises that all countries must disarm and learn to share resources and ideas if we expect to survive in the long run. Self-interest must become social-interest and the solutions arrived at and promoted are in the interest to help every human being. www.thezeitgeistmovement.com/about/

The Power of Utopia “for what justice is there in this: that a nobleman, a goldsmith, a banker, or any other man, that either does nothing at all, or, at best, is employed in things that are of no use to the public, should live in great luxury and splendour upon what is so ill acquired, and a mean man, a carter, a smith, or a ploughman, that works harder even than the beasts themselves, and is employed in labours so necessary, that no commonwealth could hold out a year without them, can only earn so poor a livelihood and must lead so miserable a life, that the condition of the beasts is much better than theirs?” Thomas More – Utopia Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’ is a fascinating and revolutionary novel published in 1516, which explored the experiences of a Narrator describing a society they had experienced in a far away land. The context is important, as this book is heavily satirical, written as it was at a time when feudalism, religion, and hierarchical exploitation were very much the norm, so even just describing a fictional society where you had such a fundamentally different experience was in itself a huge cultural and political statement. Not everything about More’s ‘Utopia’ society is progressive by modern standards, thing such as slavery were still considered a reasonable part of a functioning society, ulitmately it is not the literal make-up of the titular ‘Utopia’ that is of interest to me here, more the wider concept of a Utopia, and the function that it can provide. insideleftuk.wordpress.com/2020/04/30/the-power-of-utopia/
