A wise man once walked the pre dawn hour practising his walking meditation and he chanced upon a woman sitting by a Bodhi tree and aware instantly she was a creature of ill repute.
'Hello young Sir,' said the woman, which drew not a flicker of response, and so, intrigued by his unusual calmness and handsome face, she moved to cross his path.
'Can you not see me young sir!' She demanded. And still drawing no sign of recognition, beyond a slight change in direction, she felt the rise of challenge and stepped across to block him, exposing her breasts as he came closer.
'Young Sir, why not take some respite from the trails of your journey, come and let me ease your burden with the pleasures of flesh.'
With this the man lifted his eyes for the first time and gazed into hers, surprising her further by the depth of his calmness, then he closed his eyes momentarily in silent refusal, a gesture that instantly incensed her. She pushed her self onto him now, her breasts caressing his saffron silk.
'You know you want me,' she said laughing mockingly into his face, and for the first time in over two months Siddhartha spoke.
'Can you not see I am a holy man - woman?' He said, meeting her laughter with calm unflinching eyes.
'Oh! I see! - You fear Karma, eh?'
For an instant Siddhartha felt a sting of anger rise in his chest, yet maintained his steady breath.
'You know of Karma?' He said.
'Oh yes! I know darling, I know.'
'What do you know - woman!' Siddhartha asked, surprised by his sense of irritation at this crazy woman.
'I know darling, I know - Karma up to you darling! - Karma up to You!'
It would have been completely imperceptible to most people, for Siddhartha's breath control was already far beyond that of all but the most practised aesthetics, let alone common people. Yet he was seized by the kind of incredulity not felt since his first visit to the banished and the realization of his father's folly.
He closed his eyes again; shifting all attention to his feet to ground his senses and regain serenity, then stepped back and bowed to this woman in silent respect.
The woman's heart and mind were instantly filled with the stillness she had only suspected before, and she mouthed a silent "Thank You" as the young man resumed his long journey.
The woman returned to her village, never to feel the arrows of shame from despicable men again, no longer feeling outcast, and no longer in pain.
Later, many miles on, Siddhartha found himself lost in reverie, his meditation disturbed by memory. He thought of his mother and the wife he'd left behind, thought of the nurse who'd nurtured him as a child, and as such thoughts fleeted across his mind, a warm smile began to form on his handsome face, as a single word completely filled his mind - WOMAN!
Siddhartha continued on, still many years from his own Bodhi tree and the night he fell.
Fell into paradise lost and became Buddha (awake)
No human soul witnessed this event, only the creatures of earth and sky.
And only the Wise Man & the Whore know Why.
