WHAT IS AN ASTROLOGICAL MAGIC TALISMAN?
Astrological magic talismans are a tool that provides a direct and meaningful connection to the angelic spirits of planets, fixed stars, and lunar mansions. Being in direct communion with these celestial spirits allows you to develop a meaningful relationship with them, benefitting from their gifts, but most importantly, their wisdom.
Celestial talismans have specific requirements that involve combining precious metals, gemstones, herbs, and sometimes animal parts to create a suitable body that a connection to the spirit can be housed and imbued at a very specific time. All earthly materials are vetted for their quality and their sympathies to the celestial body in question. Many of the recipes for fixed star talismans are already listed in grimoires from the past, though new combinations are still being found through research and communication with the celestial world itself.
WHAT IS AN ASTROLOGICAL MAGIC TALISMAN’S PURPOSE?
From our perspective as people, astrological magic talismans allow us to connect to a power greater than ourselves, allowing for the wisdom and insight of the celestial realm to guide us. Sometimes, even without petitioning celestial spirits (asking for divine intervention) they exert their effects, aiming for our greatest good simply by having contact with our skin, or being the person a talisman has bonded with. Ultimately, the most altruistic purpose a talisman can have is to improve your life. Some choose to use these spirits for ill, but this is never what the celestial spirits (even the most foreboding of them) are intended to be used for.
WHY ARE TALISMANS IN LIMITED SUPPLY?
Due to the very rigorous and specific astrological conditions required to construct a talisman, electional periods range from only a few minutes to at most 45 minutes, making talismans themselves quite precious. In these periods afflictions to the planet, fixed star, or lunar mansion as well as the Moon are negated, ideally with aspects to the benefics (Venus and Jupiter) and decent essential and accidental dignity scoring for the planetary significators whenever possible. Planetary hours are also used for planet based talismans, and if it isn’t the appropriate hour then it’s not possible to use an otherwise perfect election. In short, finding suitable elections is both complicated and specific.
There are some years (and multi-year spans) where it is impossible to find an election for a specific planet or fixed star depending on the planetary conditions, and talismans that are made under poor conditions can entirely negate the positive effects it may have, or cause a less than ideal connection. For this reason, all elections used are tested before being placed in our store, and allowed to incubate a full lunar cycle beforehand, ensuring the safety and utmost benefit to our patrons.
CHOOSING A TALISMAN
Many people erroneously believe you should take the whole of your natal chart into consideration when working with a celestial spirit, but that much is only true when choosing a talisman that houses a connection with a planet -- not with fixed stars or lunar mansions as they are unconcerned with both essential and accidental dignity. Regardless of natal placements, your experiences with a fixed star or lunar mansion will be mostly uncolored by your own natal chart except for house placement, whereas the whole of the planetary placement, its rulerships, and its aspects will be for planetary talismans.
For natal planets, the dignity or debility, house ruler(s), placement in terms of house/angularity and aspects to other bodies including the lunar nodes is telling as to how your relationship with a planetary spirit is likely to start. However, these things can be augmented by the amount of attunement you have to the spheres, your own choices, as well as your current circumstances, transits, progressions, and profections.
That said, the most important thing to be considered when choosing a talisman is what you’re hoping to achieve with it, what the significations of the planet, fixed star, or lunar mansion are, and whether they’re in alignment with your goals. However, some are definitely more difficult to work with than others.
Mars and Saturn, known as ‘malefics’ can be difficult to start working with (especially if born during the day with Mars, and at night with Saturn), but regardless end up being productive for the wearer if they are willing to work with the planet in question. The same can be said of other natal planets if they are of poor essential and accidental dignity in your natal chart, but the wisdom (and realizations) the talisman will bring internally or through external experiences will offer another frame of mind to work with that would previously be unavailable to you due to your natal promise. In this sense, destiny is not ‘fixed’ but moldable -- and astrological magic offers opportunities for altering your own experience in abundance. I have witnessed that natal placements of good essential and accidental dignity provide the most ease in working, while those of poor essential and accidental dignity are more difficult to work with, but doing so helps eliminate suffering, which in its own way is a key to happiness and fulfillment in the process of The Great Work.
If you are considering purchasing a talisman and want something tailored to your needs you can also schedule a consultation with me, and I will be happy to find one that works for you and with you where you’re at. Everybody is different, and while it helps to be fluent in the language of astrology, there’s no reason why someone without proficiency should not benefit from this strange and wonderful tradition of magic.
CONSECRATING A TALISMAN
While it isn’t necessary, it is polite and fosters good will to consecrate your talisman when you receive it. In a consecration ritual you would ideally offer appropriate incense to the talisman and light a candle for the spirit. Praying to receive good from the spirit while passing the talisman through the smoke. Consecration rituals can be complex or simple depending on your level of practice, and timed with a secondary election too. For fixed star and lunar mansion talismans it would be appropriate to wait until the day when the Moon enters the mansion or is applying (by conjunction or trine) to the fixed star, for example. With planetary talismans you may want to wait until the hour and day of the planet to consecrate. You may also leave an offering to the celestial spirit -- fresh food items, flowers, incense, and libations if you so please.
PHYSICALLY CARING FOR TALISMANS
The two most important things to remember when physically caring for a talisman is that it needs to be treated with respect and is never to be touched by another person. Once they have made skin contact with someone that connection is bound to you and works for you and no one else. If contact with another person occurs, the connection with spirit could be cut off partially or completely, but it can be immediately remedied by rubbing an oil associated with the celestial being on the item to pacify it, or using a small amount of lemongrass oil (the key ingredient in van van oil) which has also reported to work in keeping the connection from being severed.
It is important to ensure that when you wear your talisman, you are not dirty as spirits do not appreciate human miasma. If you’re wearing a ring keep your hands clean and wash them regularly -- don’t wear your ring while going to the washroom for example. If you’re wearing a necklace, stay free from heavy body odor and wear clean clothes. The only exception I’ve found to this is Saturn, who genuinely doesn’t mind if you are dirty, but he’s the only one.
To store your talisman, keep it in a soft bag or a jewelry box. If you need to take your talisman off for some reason, make sure it isn’t in a pocket with keys, your phone, or anything hard that it can rub against. The spirit connected to the talisman does not enjoy being dropped, banged against something, or receiving scrapes to its body or stone. If you accidentally do this it’s meaningful to apologize nicely. Imagine what it’s like to drop your phone when someone is on the phone with you-- that’s what it sounds like when you bang your talisman against something to the spirit on the other end!
SPIRITUALLY CARING FOR TALISMANS
They say you can’t always get something for nothing, and that’s definitely true when it comes to these celestial angels, too. Often they are quietly working in the background without you even noticing, but if you’re making a special petition or you’ve been connected with a spirit for a while it’s nice to leave them an offering to say thanks.
Offerings left to the celestial spirits can be incredibly simple or complex. Here are some examples of offerings I’ve left to spirits to give you some ideas:
Fine resins burnt over charcoal -- such as benzoin styrax, frankincense, or liquid storax
A glass of alcohol, juice, or even plain water in some instances
Plant matter associated with/appropriate to the celestial spirit
Flowers associated with the celestial spirit, or just general flowers
Images that contain symbols or sigils associated with/appropriate to the celestial spirit
A statue or figurine of the spirit
An embroidered patch with an image of a constellation
Fresh fruit, cakes, or prepared meals
Essential oil in a burner with a fragrance associated with/appropriate to the celestial spirit
If you have a regular ongoing relationship with a specific spirit it is ideal to set up an altar for them, but is by no means necessary. Just remember that the more you’re willing to do for the spirit, and the attention you pay to them (think about how nice it is to get an appropriate gift!) the more likely they are to put in for you.
PETITIONING THE CELESTIAL SPIRIT INSIDE A TALISMAN
Petitions for planetary talismans may be performed on the correct day/night/hour (Google ‘planetary hour calculator’ if you’re unsure of what that means), but for fixed stars and lunar mansions you may wish to wait for the Moon to enter the correct lunar mansion, or be applying by conjunction or trine to the fixed star in question for maximum potency, but this is by no means necessary. For small favors, often all you need to do is hold your talisman (or be wearing it) and state your intention, hope, or goal, but for bigger workings it is ideal to leave an offering for the sake of energetic exchange. Either way, simply wearing a talisman is enough to gain benefits, as the spirit will attune itself to your wants/needs/desires and exert its influence upon you, the wearer, who has the opportunity to learn from the spirit’s teachings.
Offering food/plants that are alive and vibrant in energy to be consumed by the celestial spirit is ideal, and so is burning a plant or resin associated with the planet, fixed star, or lunar mansion while petitioning them, running your talisman through the smoke.
It also never hurts to offer compliments and give thanks for what you’ve already received too, as no one (not even the celestials!) enjoy doing thankless work. Don’t be afraid to offer something large in return for a major favor either -- such as giving public thanks, commissioning a piece of art, offering weekly gifts, or setting up a permanent altar.
Overall, working with celestial spirits is an incredibly rewarding process, but it doesn’t come without its work. These spirits are incredibly wise, mostly benevolent, and 'higher' examples of many of the greater themes, ideals, and values we hold in our lives, as well as the methods we need to embody in order for us to achieve them. Let these spirits be your teachers and you will not regret it.
