Latest research on Anomalous Experiences (AEs) spiritualcrisisnetwork.uk/dr-elizabeth-roxburgh-presents-latest-research/"Surveys have consistently shown that a high proportion of the general population believe in or experience anomalous experiences (AEs), which have been defined as those that ‘depart from our own familiar personal experiences or from the more usual, ordinary, and expected experiences of a given culture and time’ (Braud, 2010, p.1). Anomalous experiences can occur after negative life events and common reactions can include fear, anxiety, depression, and distress. Individuals may also have existential questions following the experience and some people report health and wellbeing benefits associated with AEs, and experience profound personal transformation and enhanced human potential as a result. However, AEs are often interpreted as symptoms of a ‘mental disorder’ within the Western medical model of illness and cultural and spiritual explanatory models of psychological wellbeing tend to be dismissed. I am critical of reductionist approaches to mental health and have a vision for a system that is more diverse and less pathologising; one that is open to different viewpoints and provides an integrative and holistic approach to supporting individuals who are trying to make sense of their AEs. I also believe that there is a need to research the actual impact or interpretation of anomalous experiences and my aims have been to increase our understanding of these experiences as psychological, social, and cultural events."

Shamanic Spiritual Emergencies: The Dialectic of Distress and Spirituality, with Dr. Ingo Lambrecht www.youtube.com/watch?v=crqeauJI2bgPublished on 10 Apr 2017 Throughout shamanic history, extreme states have been configured in relation to states of distress and spirituality. It is however not clear to what extent these states are separated, the same or if integration is at all possible. This presentation explores the different positions possible when faced with psychotic distress and spirituality. It draws on the presenter’s experiences during his shamanic training. It considers some indigenous and current models and interventions of spiritual emergencies. Bio: Dr. Ingo Lambrecht is a consultant clinical psychologist working at Manawanui, Māori Mental Health Service in Auckland, New Zealand. His special interests include children and adolescents, psychosis and personality issues, as well as trauma and mindfulness. He has also written on the cultural-clinical interface through clinical and psychoanalytic work in different cultural settings, and was privileged to undergo an intense shamanic training as a sangoma, a South African traditional healer. In addition to his recent book, Sangoma Trance States (AM Publishing, 2014), he has contributed articles and chapters on the relationships between culture, psychosis, and spirituality, presenting at national and international conferences on these themes.

Spiritual emergence, a phenomenon that is still unrecognized in the books of Medical Diagnosis... "In ancient wisdom cultures, it was understood that there were certain individuals whose craziness was the sign of a passage into a higher consciousness. They realized that the person needed to be both honored and supported in their process. They knew that the person who passes through this process successfully and becomes an accomplished shaman, healer, or teacher, returns bearing incredible gifts and blessings of wisdom and healing for everyone. To quote the noted author Ken Wilber "Though the temporary unbalance precipitated by such a crisis may resemble a nervous breakdown, it cannot be dismissed as such. For it is not a pathological phenomena but a normal event for the gifted mind in these societies, when struck by and absorbing the force of the realization of 'something far more deeply infused' inhabiting both the round earth and one's own interior"... www.awakeninthedream.com/articles/spiritual-emergence

Breaking Open: Finding a Way Through Spiritual Emergency Editor : Jules Evans, Editor : Tim Read www.aeonbooks.co.uk/product/breaking-open-finding-a-way-through-spiritual-emergency/94497/The first book in which people discuss their own spiritual emergencies and share what helped them through. Our authors are the experts of their own experience, and they share their wild journeys with courage, insight and poetry. There are fascinating parallels in their experiences, suggesting minds in extremis go to similar places. These are beautiful postcards from the edge of human consciousness, testaments to the soul’s natural resilience. Our authors have returned from their descent with valuable insights for our culture, as we go through a collective spiritual emergency, with old myths and structures breaking down, and new possibilities breaking open. What is there beyond our present egocentric model of reality? What tools can help us navigate the emergence? "This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the connection between spiritual awakening and what we normally term 'mental illness.' It is full of inspirational and moving stories that show that psychological disturbances often lead to significant personal growth, if supported properly. As a culture, we urgently need a new paradigm of mental illness and treatment, and this and this book makes an important contribution to that shift.' Steve Taylor PhD, author of The Leap and Spiritual Science

Breaking Open: Finding a Way Through Spiritual Emergency On this webinar, Jules Evans and Dr Tim Read – authors of new book Breaking Open: Finding a Way Through Spiritual Emergency, will gather together first-person accounts of spiritual emergencies and explore what they’re like and what self-care practices help people through. A spiritual emergency is a period of intense disturbance to a person’s ordinary sense of self and reality, which can involve psychotic-like symptoms such as mania, ego- dissolution, a heightened sense of meaning, hallucinations and a confusion of inner and outer worlds. These experiences can be treated as symptoms of chronic brain disorders requiring psychotropic medication. However, they are better understood as attempts by the psyche to seek greater wholeness. If properly handled, they can be transitions to greater maturity, flourishing and wisdom. mysticsandscientists.org/index.php/breaking-open-finding-a-way-through-spiritual-emergency/
