'The real crisis we face is existential: who we are as human beings, and what our presence means on this planet at this time. Ancestral myths address that crisis, not as a tragedy, but as material, as a moral imperative to put a crooked thing straight'. ~Charlotte Du Cann Outbreak As human societies find themselves gripped in the claws of a pandemic, we encounter a cultural crisis which Dark Mountain has been documenting for over a decade. In this long form essay, Charlotte Du Cann explores a myth of regeneration that might make sense of our predicament. dark-mountain.net/outbreak/

How China Moved Mental Health Online During COVID-19 OutbreakThe recent COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a need for increased availability of online mental health services. The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has resulted in the deaths of thousands throughout China and now across the world, has contributed to the development of psychological symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and stress, in medical personnel as well as the general public. As COVID-19 is highly contagious between people, standard face-to-face approaches to mental health care have become risky for both patients and practitioners. The influx of COVID-19, and the subsequent increase of mental health issues associated with it, have called for creativity. In China, a number of online mental health services have been developed and implemented to meet the needs of those affected by the outbreak. Researchers, led by Bin Zhang of the Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, write, “. . . online mental health services being used for the COVID-19 epidemic are facilitating the development of Chinese public emergency interventions, and eventually could improve the quality and effectiveness of emergency interventions.” www.madinamerica.com/2020/03/china-moved-mental-health-online-covid-19-outbreak/

It's the vulnerable that a caring society tries to protect. Some of the sobering comments I was reading under one article were from people over 65 getting their affairs in order because they know the risks. I hope people will take it seriously and look after each other whatever their age/situation. I completely understand the desire to protect those most at risk. But many who aren't liable to die are acting as if they are. That, I don't understand. You can infect others though, and here we are not being tested so if we get a cough we worry, if we are in contact with anyone else they could get it worse. It can and has been deadly to healthy people. Also the media is not helping. For me it distracts us from other things, which might be deliberate. But of course it will take priority.. as anyone is at risk.

Social-Democratic Denmark Shows How to Respond to Coronavirus BY BUE RÜBNER HANSEN The US and UK responses to coronavirus have failed miserably. But Denmark has moved swiftly to help workers by protecting wages and preventing layoffs — showing yet again, in the midst of a pandemic, that we’d all be better off living in a social democracy. jacobinmag.com/2020/03/coronavirus-denmark-social-democracy-layoffs

Joe Biden Lied in Last Night’s Debate — Italy’s Public Health Care Is Saving It From Collapse BY GIACOMO GABBUTI LORENZO ZAMPONI In last night’s debate, Joe Biden claimed that Italy shows public health care doesn’t help the response to coronavirus. But the Italian health service is providing a vital defense against mass infection — ensuring that any ill person can get proper treatment, regardless of their ability to pay. www.jacobinmag.com/2020/03/joe-biden-italy-coronavirus-public-health-care-debate

I agree that the media is not helping. The Post-Trump Phase of the Post-Truth Era Could Be Starting Soon BY BRANKO MARCETIC Joe Biden’s relentless lying in last night’s debate, and the media’s astonishingly servile reaction, have made it clear that the “post-truth era” will not be over when the Trump administration ends. www.jacobinmag.com/2020/03/joe-biden-democratic-debate-post-truth"For all the talk of living in a “post-truth” world under Trump, this has never really been true. Yes, Trump and his acolytes lie systematically and shamelessly, like past presidents have done. But there has also been a broad and vigilant media effort devoted to tracking and correcting the president’s constant lies, ensuring that with nearly every public appearance Trump makes, his falsehoods are loudly called out (“The 30 most troubling lines from Donald Trump’s latest news conference on coronavirus,” reads one recent CNN headline)."

The Coronavirus Crisis Is Political BY GRACE BLAKELEY In 2008, they told us not to “politicize” the crash. We ended up with a decade of austerity. The coronavirus crisis will reshape the economy in profound ways — now is the time to make socialist arguments about how to respond. www.jacobinmag.com/2020/03/coronavirus-crisis-political-politicize-austerity-stimulus"The last time we faced an economic crisis anywhere near as severe as the one we are about to encounter was in 2008, when the global banking system began to collapse under the weight of its own excesses. When the US government’s decision to allow Lehman Brothers to fail sent financial markets into freefall, world leaders realized it was time to step up. At first, they provided trillions of dollars worth of short-term liquidity (effectively short-term loans) to the world’s biggest banks, but they soon realized that the banks were not simply illiquid (out of cash), but insolvent (completely unable to pay their debts). At this point, they threw their weight behind their financial systems with bailouts that saw states becoming significant shareholders in many of the world’s largest financial institutions. In the several years that followed, many countries adopted fiscal stimulus measures aimed at limiting the impact of the financial meltdown on the real economy. Initially, the United States and the UK both implemented large stimulus programs aimed at absorbing job losses and preventing the kind of Keynesian downward spiral in demand that gave us the Great Depression. But it was China that saved the global economy from another depression, with a stimulus package worth nearly 20 percent of GDP at its peak. Huge state investment protected both the Chinese economy and the economies of its major trading partners."

World virus infections hit 200,000; Borders jammed in Europe"The novel coronavirus pandemic has now infected more than 200,000 people and killed more than 8,000, causing a huge disruption at European border crossings on Wednesday after countries implemented strict travel rules in an attempt to slow the outbreak. Johns Hopkins University stated that 82,000 people have recovered from the virus, which has a much larger effect on the elderly and those with preexisting health problems. European countries have shut down borders to nonessential traffic, only allowing for trucks carrying critical goods like food and medicine, which has led to massive congestion of travelers and other trucks. Hungary temporarily opened its borders in phases last night, however, by early Wednesday, trucks were backed up for 17 miles. Italy now has over 31,000 cases as the country implements a mandatory quarantine for its residents." www.oodaloop.com/briefs/2020/03/18/world-virus-infections-hit-200000-borders-jammed-in-europe/
