Disappointed by this and Simon Wessely saying UN convention recommendations 'go too far.' Who are they going too far for? Mental distress is an illness as much as any other and vulnerable people deserve the protection of full human rights.

Don't see it all quite matches up with 10 years of right wing Austerity / Cuts / Welfare 'Reforms' & a lot of the realities for people on the ground. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWbsDuG66pg

THERESA MAY'S MENTAL HEALTH ACT REFORM: WARM WORDS BUT SCANT ACTION www.byline.com/column/22/article/2381"With virtually nil national coverage Theresa May's commissioned report on reforming the mental health act- the first for 30 years - was released last month. But it is a tame review acknowledging there is institutional racism in mental health but offering no solutions."

Like most politicians, May is good at talking the talk, and soundbites, less with carrying out her 'promises' in a manner that actually benefits people, other than her and her ilk.

Independent report Modernising the Mental Health Act – final report from the independent review The Independent Review of the Mental Health Act 1983 has set out recommendations for government on how the Act and associated practice needs to change. Published 6 December 2018 Last updated 14 February 2019 www.gov.uk/government/publications/modernising-the-mental-health-act-final-report-from-the-independent-reviewWelcome to the NIHR Mental Health Policy Research Unit www.ucl.ac.uk/psychiatry/research/mental-health-policy-research-unitAfter the Mental Health Act Review: Research Priorities Introduction This is a short survey carried out by the NIHR Mental Health Policy Research Unit. Last year we contributed to the Mental Health Act Review by exploring the rates of people being detained under the MHA in the UK, service user experiences of being detained, and interventions for helping to minimise the likelihood of someone being detained. We are now considering what our research priorities moving forward should be in light of the review and would like to hear your views on this. So if you are happy to share your thoughts with us it would be really appreciated if you could complete the following questionnaire. It should take about five to ten minutes to complete. Thank you for your interest. opinio.ucl.ac.uk/s?s=60973

Mental Health Act Review campaign Over the last few months, NSUN has continued campaigning with other user-led groups for major changes in the Mental Health Act Review recommendations - www.nsun.org.uk/FAQs/mental-health-act-mha-review, to bring them in line with full human rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We now have a one-page campaign sheet - www.nsun.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=87aaa26f-0002-4a4e-9df4-5f05cb573b94which can be used to encourage still more individuals and organisations to sign up to our campaign. We have also produced a model letter to send to local MP candidates during the general election period. This is a crucial time, both because of the general election and the current lack of support in political manifestos for our campaign and because we have confirmation that, despite everything which has been going on politically, a Green/White Paper based on the Review recommendations is still expected in December, or otherwise in the early New Year. We would very much welcome your support in two important ways: Using our one-page campaign sheet, available here - www.nsun.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=87aaa26f-0002-4a4e-9df4-5f05cb573b94, to obtain more signatures for our campaign from both individuals and organisations Using our model letter for MP candidates to call on them to support our campaign. ICYMI: Update about the Mental Health Act Review’s recommendations and progress towards a White Paper The Department of Social Care has been working intensively on the Mental Health Act (MHA) Review’s recommendations. The original aim was for a White Paper drawn from the recommendations to be available by December of last year, but this timetable was interrupted by the calling of a general election. According to the latest information we have, the White Paper is now due to be published during the next three months. However, the exact timetable will depend on the new government. When the White Paper is made available, there is due to be a 12-week public consultation period as well. The final MHA Review Advisory Group meeting last year was cancelled, again because of the general election, However, when the White Paper is published, there may also be further meetings with Advisory Group members, including NSUN. NSUN is continuing to campaign for serious human rights shortfalls in the MHA Review recommendations to be addressed. As part of this, NSUN has now produced a campaign film to explain and publicise our concerns. You can watch this film here. It would also be very helpful if you can circulate the film as widely as possible. www.youtube.com/watch?v=p472qmzrrBM
