Afghanistan on brink of collapse with millions facing starvation www.cbsnews.com/news/afghanistan-humanitarian-crisis-60-minutes-2021-12-10/When the U.S. military pulled out of Afghanistan in August, the Taliban immediately seized control and the international community acted quickly – freezing Afghan assets and foreign aid to pressure the Taliban to negotiate. To date, those negotiations haven't happened. Today, 38 million Afghans find themselves facing one of the worst humanitarian crises on the planet with millions unable to pay for food or basic goods, putting half the country at risk of starvation this winter. "I've been with WFP for a long time, 20-plus years, and I've never seen a crisis unfold and escalate at the pace and scale that we are seeing," Mary Ellen McGroarty told 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi.

France and U.K. Sued for Manslaughter After 27 Migrants Seeking Help Drowned in English Channel www.democracynow.org/2022/1/4/migrant_death_lawsuit_france_englandThe French humanitarian group Utopia 56 has filed a manslaughter lawsuit against British and French officials for failing to help 27 migrants who drowned to death in the English Channel in November. The only two survivors say they were ignored when they made distress calls and told their location to French and English rescue services after their boat capsized and started sinking in the freezing waters off the French port city of Calais. We speak with Nikolaï Posner of Utopia 56, who says the lawsuit is meant to “bring the truth and the transparency on what happened.”
