Power and scandal: how Murdoch drove the UK, US and Australia to the right Story by Dan Sabbagh www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/power-and-scandal-how-murdoch-drove-the-uk-us-and-australia-to-the-right/ar-AA1h4sfM#image=1Seventy-one years ago Rupert Murdoch inherited a single newspaper in Adelaide and turned it into the English-speaking world’s most powerful news provider, driving the politics of three countries – Australia, the UK and the US – to the right and surviving a string of scandals and controversies until his retirement at the age of 92. An empire of newspapers At 21 he took over the Adelaide News from his father, and by the 1960s had created Australia’s largest newspaper group, whose titles made and broke Labor prime minister Gough Whitlam in 1972. Turning his attention to Britain in the late 1960s, he bought the News of the World and launched the Sun, which rapidly became the country’s bestselling title with a crude formula of sex, celebrity and sport. The Sun, whose Page 3 topless photographs lasted 44 years, turned from Labour to supporting Margaret Thatcher. Murdoch bought the Times titles with a supportive government in the background and fought the print unions at Wapping – before switching later to Tony Blair, eagerly backing him over the invasion of Iraq and sticking with him long after it had been revealed to be a disaster. When the polls turned again, the papers, always with the proprietor making the final call, backed David Cameron, then Brexit, a once marginal cause that had been kept alive by a handful of rightwing newspapers and promoted with unsophisticated but memorable headlines – “Up yours Delors!” – until it eventually went mainstream.

Lies, Incorporated: The World of Post-Truth Politics by Ari Rabin-Havt (Author), Media Matters for America (Author)
A stunning investigation of the history of organized misinformation in politics.
In today’s post-truth political landscape, there is a carefully concealed but ever-growing industry of organized misinformation that exists to create and disseminate lies in the service of political agendas. Ari Rabin-Havt and Media Matters for America present a revelatory history of this industry—which they've dubbed Lies, Incorporated—and show how it has crippled legislative progress on issues including tobacco regulation, public health care, climate change, gun control, immigration, abortion, and same-sex marriage. Eye-opening and indispensable, Lies, Incorporated takes an unflinching look at the powerful network of politicians and special interest groups that have launched coordinated assaults on the truth to shape American politics.

OVER ASSANGE, BRITAIN’S PRESS PREFERS TO SERVE POWER NOT MEDIA FREEDOM We might have expected British journalists to have turned the Julian Assange case into a cause celebre for press freedom and free speech. Not at all. Most of the mainstream media are silent or hostile, and are acting as instruments of the state. PETER OBORNE 18 SEPTEMBER 2023 www.declassifieduk.org/over-assange-britains-press-prefers-to-serve-power-not-media-freedom/Just over ten years ago, Lord Justice Leveson proposed tougher legislation of newspapers amidst general horror that journalists had hacked the phone of murdered schoolgirl Millie Dowler. His proposals were greeted with fury. In the Daily Mail Richard Littlejohn said they meant the “suppression of free speech.” This was, added Littlejohn, the “classic hallmark of a fascist regime.” Mike Harris for the Daily Telegraph warned that “three centuries of press freedom will be consigned to the dustbin of history, with investigative journalism almost impossible and shackles imposed on our much-loved local press”. Every title from the Murdoch press, Associated Newspapers and the Telegraph – the hegemonic groups which account for approximately 75% of mainstream newspaper readership – denounced the Leveson reforms. Meanwhile they united to launch a concerted campaign – the so called free speech network – to block them. It was one of the most effective campaigns in modern times. Behind the scenes politicians were nobbled. Deals were struck. Leveson Two – the section of the enquiry which would have examined links between politicians, the police and press – was blocked. Let’s contrast the campaign against Leveson with British media coverage of the US attempt to extradite Julian Assange. Rest in Link

" The media in the United States effectively represents the interests of corporate America, and ... the media elite are the watchdogs of what constitutes acceptable ideological messages, the parameters of news and information content, and the general use of media resources.” Peter Phillips, Project Censored, 1998
"It is the function of the CIA to keep the world unstable, and to propagandize and teach the American people to hate, so we will let the Establishment spend any amount of money on arms." - John Stockwell, former CIA official and author

Eight BBC journalists have written to Al-Jazeera accusing the BBC of "failing to humanise Palestinians," inaccurate reporting, double standards, "omitting key historical context" in their reporting of Israel's war on Gaza and failing to call out Israel's human rights abuses. They also spend a lot more time on humanising Israeli victims by giving you their names, covering individual funerals, and interviewing affected families. They will ask Palestinians if they “condemn Hamas”, but they wont ask guests who defend Israel if they condemn the actions of the Israeli government. They also point out examples of where a presenter has shown a complete lack of compassion when interviewing Palestinians guests who have themselves lost family members as a direct result of the bombing.
Al-Jazeera reports.. "The BBC journalists said that across British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) platforms, terms like 'massacre' and 'atrocity', have been reserved “only for Hamas, framing the group as the only instigator and perpetrator of violence in the region. This is inaccurate but aligns with the BBC’s overall coverage”
