Makes a bit of a mockery of their 'fusion' capacity law in NI with all that going on.

Good Practices for people centered & recovery oriented Community-Based Mental Health Services The WHO QualityRights initiative is working to improve the quality of mental health services globally and to promote the human rights of people with mental health conditions and psychosocial, intellectual, and cognitive disabilities. As part of this initiative, we are developing a good practice guidance document which will present information on community-based mental health services that promote human rights and the recovery approach. We are contacting you to help us identify people-centered services that you are aware of, that operate without coercion, and that respond to people’s needs by promoting autonomy, inclusion in the community, and the involvement of people with lived experience at all levels of decision-making. This should include services that support people experiencing acute crises but that do not resort to force, coercion, involuntary admission and treatment or the use of seclusion and restraints. By completing the questionnaire in the link at the bottom of this email, you will have the opportunity to submit up to five mental health services that you believe should be considered as a good practice. By participating, you can contribute to shaping the future of mental health services. Anybody who is involved in providing a service, has experience of using a service, or knows of a service is welcome to complete the questionnaire. Please note that we are not looking for services that focus specifically on e-interventions, phone-based interventions, training programs, housing and employment services or services focused on advocacy and/or system reform. The online Consultation will close on 30th June 2019 Thank you for your help, Dr. Michelle Funk, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, World Health Organization. extranet.who.int/dataform/237749?lang=en

Mental Health Act Review campaign Over the last few months, NSUN has continued campaigning with other user-led groups for major changes in the Mental Health Act Review recommendations - www.nsun.org.uk/FAQs/mental-health-act-mha-review, to bring them in line with full human rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We now have a one-page campaign sheet - www.nsun.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=87aaa26f-0002-4a4e-9df4-5f05cb573b94which can be used to encourage still more individuals and organisations to sign up to our campaign. We have also produced a model letter to send to local MP candidates during the general election period. This is a crucial time, both because of the general election and the current lack of support in political manifestos for our campaign and because we have confirmation that, despite everything which has been going on politically, a Green/White Paper based on the Review recommendations is still expected in December, or otherwise in the early New Year. We would very much welcome your support in two important ways: Using our one-page campaign sheet, available here - www.nsun.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=87aaa26f-0002-4a4e-9df4-5f05cb573b94, to obtain more signatures for our campaign from both individuals and organisations Using our model letter for MP candidates to call on them to support our campaign. Measuring How Mental Health Professionals See Service Users’ Rights A new scale has been developed and validated to examine beliefs held by mental health professionals towards service users’ rights. www.madinamerica.com/2019/12/measuring-mental-health-professionals-see-service-users-rights/A new study, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, set out to develop and validate a scale that examines the beliefs and attitudes of mental health professionals toward service users’ rights. The scale, developed by researchers with lived experiences of mental health problems, is in response to an increased interest in service user experiences and a global push toward autonomy and freedom of choice in mental health services. “Given the extent of the consequences of stigma and coercion towards mental health service users, it is essential to raise awareness among mental health professionals in order to foster non-stigmatizing and empowering attitudes through frameworks such as Recovery and Citizenship. In the context of planning and implementation of these training and awareness activities, there is a need to evaluate the impact this has on the beliefs and attitudes of professionals through standardized measures,” the researchers Francisco José Eiroa-Orosa and Laura Limiñana-Bravo from the University of Barcelona and Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health write. #psychiatry #rights #mentalhealth www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/16/2/244/htm
