The Anti-Trans Panic Is Rooted in White Supremacist Ideology Gender-affirming care poses a challenge to the reproductive imperative imposed by white supremacy. By Florence Ashley & Blu Buchanan , TRUTHOUT PublishedMay 19, 2023 truthout.org/articles/the-anti-trans-panic-is-rooted-in-white-supremacist-ideology/In March 2022, the Idaho House of Representatives, like legislatures in 13 other states, voted to criminalize providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender youth. When asked about the bill’s threat to the lives of trans youth, Republican State Rep. Julianne Young replied, “I see this conversation as an extension of the pro-life argument.… We’re not talking about the life of the child, but we are talking about the potential to give life to another generation.” On the one hand, we want to emphasize that Young’s assertion, suggesting that trans people never have or raise children, is false. Not only do trans people have and raise children, they often do so biologically, using their own gametes. On the other hand, it is important not to reproduce the implicit logic of Young’s statement, that adoption, fostering, extended family and kinship networks are somehow less important than biological reproduction. By reducing the definition of family and care to biological reproduction, Young is participating in the increasingly common “great replacement” discourse, a rhetorical framework grounded in the belief that society is structured first and foremost as a set of competing groups jostling for biological superiority. So, whose group matters to Young? Using the basic demographics of her state, its clear that she is concerned with white trans youth. Looking beyond demographics, we have to think about who “counts” as a child in the United States. As scholars like Jules Gill-Peterson and others suggest, whiteness and childhood are co-constructed. Children of color are rarely described the way we describe white children, as something to be protected, nurtured and supported. Instead, they undergo “adultification,” being treated legally and socially as adults. White children, within this framework, need to be protected from the “social contagion” of transness. In comparison, children of color are already contaminated because of the historical connections between race and sexual and gender transgression.

Are Conservatives at the Daily Wire Really Calling for Trans “Genocide”? By the standards of the Jewish jurist who coined the word, yes they are. www.truthdig.com/articles/is-the-conservative-daily-wire-really-calling-for-trans-genocide/“There can be no middle way in dealing with transgenderism. It is all or nothing,” Michael Knowles declared at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual event attended by some 2,200 conservative activists and officials. While Knowles doesn’t have the national profile of some of his fellow CPAC speakers — a list that included Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene — his influence within conservative circles is enormous. Each month, “The Michael Knowles Show” on The Daily Wire, an online network co-founded by Ben Shapiro, attracts over half a million listeners. Nearly twice as many people follow him on Twitter. “If transgenderism is false, as it is,” Knowles continued, then we should not indulge it, especially since that indulgence requires taking away the rights and customs of so many people. If it is false, then for the good of society, and especially for the good of the poor people who have fallen prey to this confusion, transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely. The whole preposterous ideology — at every level. The online backlash from progressives was immediate, with many interpreting Knowles as endorsing what amounts to “genocide.” An Equality California article warned, “Knowles’ call to ‘eradicate transgenderism’ smacks of genocide and mass acts of violence.” Alejandra Caraballo, an attorney at Harvard’s Cyberlaw Clinic, tweeted that “Knowles is openly calling for genocide against trans people.” And Adam Vary, a writer for Variety, argued that “this is genocidal. That is not hyperbole or alarmist; this rhetoric is calling for the eradication of a group of people for who they are.”

Trans Youth Held a Prom Outside the US Capitol. It Sparkled With Joy & Healing. The day of laughter and hope offered youth a reprieve from having to always defend themselves from anti-trans attacks. By Chase Strangio , TRUTHOUT PublishedMay 23, 2023 truthout.org/articles/trans-youth-held-a-prom-outside-the-us-capitol-it-sparkled-with-joy-healing/By mid-February, it was already clear that 2023 was going to be a brutal and unrelenting year in legislative assaults on trans lives — particularly on the lives of trans youth. Even with that foresight, every day has been newly upsetting as these attacks have only escalated. Each day we have seen new lows from politicians willing to demean, dehumanize and destabilize trans people: from Governors Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis escalating the terror they bring to families of trans youth, to Florida lawmakers criminalizing trans people using the restroom, to another 20 states acting to cut off lifesaving health care for trans adolescents. We are living in scary times.

LGBTQ+ activists call for new strategies to promote equality after Target backlash Story by By DENISE LAVOIE and ANDREW SELSKY, Associated Press • 12h ago www.msn.com/en-gb/news/us/lgbtq-activists-call-for-new-strategies-to-promote-equality-after-target-backlash/ar-AA1bRMZPRICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Following Target’s announcement last week that it removed products and relocated Pride displays to the back of certain stores in the South, activists in the LGBTQ+ community are calling for new campaigns to convince corporate leaders not to cave to anti-LGBTQ+ groups. “We need a strategy on how to deal with corporations that are experiencing enormous pressure to throw LGBTQ people under the bus,” said California state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, a member of the LGBTQ legislative caucus. “We need to send a clear message to corporate America that if you’re our ally — if you are truly our ally — you need to be our ally, not just when it’s easy but also when it’s hard,” he said. While the retailer said its actions were aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of its employees after protesters knocked over Pride signs and confronted workers in stores, the controversy comes at a time when conflict over LGBTQ+ rights is simmering. Nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in state legislatures around the country this year. At least 18 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Effective for LGBTQ Individuals with Trauma Histories In a new clinical trial, researchers found psychodynamic psychotherapy to be a promising treatment for the reduction of PTSD symptoms in LGBTQ individuals. By José G. Luiggi-Hernández -May 31, 2023 www.madinamerica.com/2023/05/psychodynamic-psychotherapy-effective-for-lgbtq-individuals-with-trauma-histories/In a ground-breaking clinical trial recently documented in the American Journal of Psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy — a form of depth psychology — was found to be effective in mitigating symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among LGBTQ individuals. Not only did the therapy reduce primary PTSD symptoms, but it also seemingly eased associated symptoms of depression and anxiety, fostering improved psychosocial functioning. The study marks a promising leap toward a treatment approach specifically tailored to the nuanced needs and lived experiences of the LGBTQ community — a community disproportionately affected by PTSD. John Keefe, the lead author from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and his co-authors emphasize the importance of therapists appreciating the broader picture of the individual’s identity and experiences beyond the immediate trauma. “Some LGBTQ patients with PTSD may benefit from therapists who explicitly consider the role of identity factors or other potentially important and preoccupying developmental (e.g., family rejection, alienation) or contemporary experiences (e.g., internalized stigma) beyond the index trauma,” the authors write. “Application of trauma-focused therapy techniques may also require additional sensitivity toward the context and realities of different LGBTQ patients.” Members of the LGBTQ community, research has shown, experience exposure to traumatic events, such as physical and sexual abuse, at higher rates than their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts. Such individuals, thus, bear a disproportionate burden of PTSD. Additionally, the study underscores that this community confronts extra stressors, including minority stress, economic strain, and personal losses. These adversities may intensify the likelihood of developing PTSD and may challenge their ability to cope effectively. This new research provides a hopeful approach for effectively treating PTSD in this population, considering their specific needs and realities.
